About the Author

Following several senior positions and 13 years in health service laboratories, G. O. Evans left the post of principal clinical chemist at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, England, to enter the field of laboratory animal toxicology and clinical pathology. He was head of clinical pathology at Wellcome Research Laboratories, Beckenham, England, moving to join Astra Charnwood, and later the two AstraZeneca sites in the United Kingdom as director of clinical pathology.

Evans is now a director of A. George Owen and Company. He was the editor of and a contributor to a number of chapters of the book Animal Clinical Chemistry: A Primer for Toxicologists. In addition to lecturing at various universities in the UK, he has published over 40 papers on animal clinical pathology and toxicology. Other activities have included membership on the editorial board of the journal Laboratory Animals for over 15 years, and he has served as scientific secretary, chairman, and now is a lifetime honorary member of the Association of Comparative Clinical Pathology, UK.

About the Author

One of today’s most highly regarded writers on esoteric topics, RICHARD SMOLEY is a graduate of Harvard College and the University of Oxford. He was a longtime editor of the venerated spiritual journal Gnosis. Smoley is the author of books including Inner Christianity, The Essential Nostradamus, and Forbidden Faith: The Secret History of Gnosticism. A short compendium of thoughtful articles

Richard Smoley's latest book offers a collection of some of his articles first published in New Dawn magazine as well as a few from other periodicals between the years 1997 and 2012. Altogether, this relatively short volume is composed of 16 separate chapters, each of which is a small gem of its own designed to be fast and enjoyable reading.

While I'm guessing the book's title is a play on words of P.D. Ouspensky's In Search of the Miraculous: Fragments of an Unknown Teaching, the chapters themselves offer us brief glimpses of a variety of subjects suitable for the novice of metaphysical studies as well as those who have specialised in that area for a long time. Considering myself to be a member of the latter category, I found many delightful and interesting titbits of information of which I had not been aware.

Perhaps what is most engaging about this book is that Smoley gives us insight into some of his own personal experiences in the realm of the supernatural, whether they be direct encounters or accounts related to him by others. With his usual skilful writing ability, he tempts us to go further into our own investigations of subjects like archaic wisdom, Nostradamus, prophecy, The Da Vinci Code, the 2012 phenomenon, Atlantis, Freemasonry, The Course in Miracles, the nature of prayer, and many other areas of study.

Smoley's knowledge of Greek and Latin enlightens us with definitions with which we may not have been familiar, and add to our understanding of sometimes difficult subject matter. As early as in his Preface, for instance, he gives us the root of the word "esotericism" as coming from the Greek esoterikos, meaning "further in." This resonated and added to my mundane definition of that word as merely "hidden."

Whether he's talking about such diverse ideas as the Kabbalah; Tarot; the Western magical tradition; widening our observing faculties and qualities of attention in the manner taught by G.I. Gurdjieff; C.G. Jung's world of archetype and synchronicity; the predictions of Edgar Cayce; the astral realm; sacred literature; Priory of Sion; Mayan Calendar; Theosophy; the Rosicrucians; the Kahunas of Hawaii; Gnosticism; Hermeticism; psychic protection; and a host of other fascinating topics, Smoley presents them all in a thoroughly delightful and down-to-earth way.

The author's thematic stream prods us to develop our own way of finding our true Self, our real "I," if you will. While there are innumerable methods for this in the "esoteric tradition - the body of knowledge that underlies all the great spiritual traditions of humanity," Smoley cautions that we cannot necessarily find this in ordinary religion which "involves a relationship with a personal deity." Perhaps we can only find the useful and correct method for enlightenment in the sacred and secret technology of "real" magic prompted by meditation and directed imagination.

Of course, Smoley admits we are left with many more questions than answers as to the nature of other realms beyond our own that may, indeed, be generating and controlling factors in our day to day lives here on Earth. He reminds us, "We do not know. The evidence would seem to suggest as much. At any rate, I am convinced that we will not understand the rise and fall of civilisations, or history itself, until we do know."

And, he reiterates, a small step in beginning to crack the barrier to that knowledge is to get in touch with what it is, both within us and outside of us, that "experiencing." But, he cautions that, "...this is not ordinary ego, with its thoughts and desires and judgements. Why? Because we can step back and look at all these things within ourselves. If we can look even at internal events, what is doing the looking?"

In the final chapter of the book, entitled "The Dual Nature of Reality," Smoley gives us the goal from the Samkhya, thought to be the oldest of all Indian philosophical systems. It can be, and perhaps should be, the ultimate goal for those of us who are involved in metaphysical pursuits.

He summarises that ancient teaching's objective and intended result in this way: "The spiritual path, which is for a long time the process of detachment, is a means of gradually separating the `I' from the world, that is, separating consciousness from the contents of its experience. At this point, supreme illumination takes place. The old world falls away, and a new one arises. Such is enlightenment."

Facts or Fiction?

Smoley takes us on a tour of all things esoteric using his personal journey into that world as the framework. Beginning with the revival of interest in occultism which blossomed along with Hippies and Free Love, through the consolidation now known as New Age, and finally arriving at today's New Consciousness, he separates fact from fiction bringing reason and common sense to subjects which have been exploited and misrepresented in proportion to the profitability that was generated.

With scholarly precision, he revisits Nostradamus, The Da Vinci Code, Atlantis, Freemasonry, A Course in Miracles, New Thought, and many other famed repositories of "secret wisdom". Fair and clear-eyed, he communicates what his research unearthed in a surprisingly lively style. He speaks honestly to his readers as he recounts, elaborates and debunks. It makes for an intriguing read as well as excellent reference material. For those of us who also lived the journey he writes about, it a nostalgic revisiting with interesting clarifications.

Good read, and well worth the wait.

Richard Smoley is one author that I have a lot of time for, ever since I stumbled across him in New Dawn Magazine, several years back. His latest book offers a variety of topics, ranging from Prophecy to Hidden Masters, Atlantis to the power of Prayer, and much more besides.

But be warned these topics are vast in scope and if you wish to really explore them then Supernatural serves only as an appetizer, and not the main course. For that you need to possibly belong to a mystery school, or have a vast library and infinite time to spend in pursuing your interests. And let us not ignore the very critical aspect of experience.

Nonetheless, Richard Smoley has written a very good book, and one that allows one to gain a grasp of some of the basics. At least as far as understanding is concerned.

But I think the real worth, for me comes in Richard's words that appear at the end of each chapter, where his experience and knowledge, humility and wisdom really shine through. I wont spoil it for you, other than to say, that Richard has a gift of putting things in their right place and in their right order. And that is far better than being led astray.

It's OK but...

I think this course has some good features - it teaches you some useful phrases, without too much attention to the grammatical reasons behind them, eg., so if you wanted to just get out and have a go, you'd have something to work with. But my complaint is the same - if you want to start to understand, learn and apply rules, the grammar is spread all over the place, and only part of it - the 'easier' bits - seems to be included in the book at all. It does a bit of the accusative, eg., but not the more complicated aspects, and nowhere does it bring all the rules applying to any case together in one place, so you're left guessing a bit what the rules might be (eg. instrumental). If you wanted a phrase book, you'd buy a phrase book. You can learn some vocab, of course, but it's hard to apply it more broadly without the knowledge of the grammar to do so. The CDs are useful as far as they go, but they're not great. It's OK, but I'd expect more for the price.

About the Author

Alan D. Evans, M.S., CPA

Alan is currently a faculty member at Moore College of Art and Design and Montgomery County Community College, teaching a variety of computer science and business courses. He holds a BS in accounting from Rider University, an MS in information systems from Drexel University, and he is a certified public accountant. After a successful career in business, Alan finally realized that his true calling is education. He has been teaching at the college level since 2000. Alan enjoys attending technical conferences and meets regularly with faculty and administrators from other colleges to discuss curriculum development and new methods of engaging students.

 

Kendall E. Martin, Ph.D.

Kendall is a professor of Computer Science at Montgomery County Community College with teaching experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at a number of institutions, including Villanova University, DeSales University, Ursinus College, and Arcadia University. Kendall’s education includes a BS in electrical engineering from the University of Rochester and an MS and a PhD in engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. She has industrial experience in research and development environments (AT&T Bell Laboratories), as well as experience with several start-up technology firms. At Ursinus College, Kendall developed a successful faculty-training program for distance education instructors, and she makes conference presentations during the year.

 

Mary Anne Poatsy, MBA, CFP

Mary Anne is a senior faculty member at Montgomery County Community College, teaching various computer application and concepts courses in face-to-face and online environments. She enjoys speaking at various professional conferences about innovative classroom strategies. She holds a BA in psychology and education from Mount Holyoke College and an MBA in finance from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management. Mary Anne has been in teaching since 1997, ranging from elementary and secondary education to Montgomery County Community College, Gwynedd-Mercy College, Muhlenberg College, and Bucks County Community College, as well as training in the professional environment. Before teaching, she was a vice president at Shearson Lehman Hutton in the Municipal Bond Investment Banking Department.

Not the full book!!!!

Very upsetting that this is not the full version of the book and that is not disclosed. My course required this book till chapter 13 but this only goes to chapter 9. This should be clearly stated that it is an abbreviated version of the book!!!

because that sucked.

Got the digital copy, couldn't read it on my surface because publisher set it up so it could only be read on certain tablets. Got stuck doing two entire classes with this textbook, trying to read it off of my tiny phone screen. Major issue that publisher needs to address, because that sucked.

My name is Tommy Barnett.

I’m a pastor and have devoted my entire adult life to helping people connect with God and find better ways to live. I could fill up this book and more with all kinds of spiritual and practical ideas about what works in life and what doesn’t. I think it would be good stuff, but I have one practical idea that I know from my own experience rises far above all the others.

I admit it’s not an overly unique concept, like the invention of the Internet, for example. However, it’s an idea that has helped me realize success and great satisfaction in all aspects of my personal and professional life. I mean everything—from personal goals and dreams to marriage to raising a family to relationships to work.

I believe the idea can change your life, though, as it has changed mine.

Most importantly, it has helped me serve God and others more effectively. Trust me, my idea is not rocket science; in fact, it’s so simple that anyone can understand and benefit from it.

I believe the idea can change your life, though, as it has changed mine. I call it the power of a half hour.

Many people think of a half hour as a minimal or meaningless gap in time, downtime to catch your breath between periods of major effort. But the truth is your half hours can determine the difference between success and failure. Your half hours direct and shape your future.

You can literally change your world in thirty minutes. In the same way that your effect on the world is felt one life at a time, so is that effect delivered through the careful and thoughtful investment of your half hours. The beauty of this reality is that anyone can do it. You don’t need a PhD, and you don’t need a life coach to pull it off. All you need is to accept the idea, have a clear sense of your God-given purpose, examine your activity patterns, sensitize yourself to your time choices, and start taking advantage of the power of a half hour.

Every half hour in your day is a power-loaded resource. Your choice of how to spend those minutes is the focus of this book, which I intend to make a practical conversation about a resource that we misunderstand, abuse, take for granted, and ignore.

I want to help you become the person God intends you to be and accomplish His plans for your life. And in order to do that, you need to use your small increments of time wisely—not just the big slices of time that are devoted to both routine daily activities and major life events.

I agree with Harvey Mackay who said, “Time is free, but it’s priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it. Once you’ve lost it, you can never get it back.”

I know that it’s not easy to find even a “free” hour in the world we live in. I also have learned that it’s difficult to accomplish a great deal in a quarter hour—especially if you need to communicate graciously and genuinely with another person within that time frame. But a half hour—it works!

Claiming the Power of a Half Hour

Here’s how we will approach turning your half hours into life-changing blocks of time. In the seven parts of this book, I will outline how seizing the power of a half hour can make such a difference in these major areas:

To help you remember key themes in this book, each chapter contains a Half-Hour Power Principle.

By the way, researchers tell us that most people never finish reading the books they start. Because I think there’s too much helpful information in these pages for you to abandon the content before you get to the end, let me suggest that you do four simple but practical things as you read this book.

First, read the book in half-hour spaces in your schedule. Each of the chapters in the book is short enough to read easily in a half hour. You might want to have more than one block during a day when you read the book, but start this practice as you engage with this book. In addition, at the back of this book you will find a Personal Power of a Half Hour Action Plan. This plan is set up to help you, over a thirty-day period, fully incorporate The Power of a Half Hour
concepts into all major areas of your life. You have heard that it takes about a month to establish a new habit? I urge you to use this thirty-day plan to make the power of a half hour a habit you will never break!

Second, if something strikes you as personally helpful, jot down notes about changes you need to make. Too often we are so intent on getting through a book that we forget some of the useful insights or challenges it provided.

Third, pray that God will help you to implement the things you discover in these pages (or in your related reflections) that will improve your life experience. Fourth, and finally, express a commitment to someone you know and trust that you are going to integrate these simple changes into your lifestyle. Ask that person to check up on you once or twice a month to see how intentional you are being with your half hours. That simple act of accountability will help prevent the reading of this book from being just another helpful but forgotten task. (You may also wish to find mutual encouragement in learning the half-hour concepts by attending a small-group discussion. A guide for such a study is included at the end of the book.)

I’ve been practicing these principles so long that I can now say I am a product of my half hours. I don’t always get it right, but I’m very much aware of the gift of life and the value of time. My half hours—the ones I carefully plan, as�well as the unplanned ones I discover—are committed to doing His will in my life because I want to serve our God and others.

Not what I expected

I found this book in my local bookstore in the business management section. Based on the description I expected it to be a time management and productivity book with an emphasis on living a balanced (Christian) life. Instead it was mainly an anecdotal book from a Pentecostal minister regarding the ways he believes God has used him in ministry. It might be worth reading if you were looking for inspirational stories for church building, but if you are primarily interested in a time management book this is not it.

All It Takes Is Half An Hour

You really can't know the value of time. There is a lot that can happen in a small segment of the day. Barnett suggests that a small portion of the day can mean so much to the rest of the time. Nothing he suggests is impossible to implement. It is written in an easy to follow style. The tone is conversational. It is like having a friend walking along with you with advise'
This book is a must for those who wonder the value of time.

Can You Afford Half an Hour?

Tommy Barnett has written another self-help book – just what we need in our world! Yes, that was oozing with sarcasm; so, if you missed it, go back and reread that opening line. The Power of Half an Hour is a simplistic book, and the author admits so in the introduction. Yet, that simplicity is what attracted me to the book. Far too often, humanity likes to overcomplicate the things that are simply crystal clear.

If you choose to tackle this book, I do want to throw out two specific cautions: (1) heed the advice of the author -- do not “race” through the book but take it one chapter a day for a month by jotting down thoughts; and (2) halt the tendency to move on immediately to the next self-help/leadership book. Therein is part of our problem! We move from one book or one fad or one practice to the next without mastering the previous one.

Barnett’s idea that 30 minutes, if used correctly, can change your life is absolutely correct. Whether we believe it or not, we are defined by our moments. The private moments that hardly anyone can see are what shape our lives, character, success, and work. What he espouses is obviously a Biblical principal: Ephesians 5:16 says “Making the most of your time because the days are evil” (NASB). He quotes a man named Harvey Mackay who said it quite well: “Time is free, but it’s priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it. Once you’ve lost it, you can never get it back.” (xii)

The book is organized into 30 chapters and is designed to be read inside of 30 minutes; so the author is reinforcing his own premise by design. Each section has a “Half Hour Power Principle” and the last few pages of the book include a daily personal action plan. Barnett has established a simple and useable format to assist any and all readers that wish to improve. Everyone has 30 minutes a day that can be set aside for personal and spiritual development, so we do not have an excuse (unless we admit our laziness).

I encourage you to do what the author says in the “tag” line of the book’s title – take back your life thirty minutes at a time. You can do it, but the question is: will you do it? Life is too short to drift aimlessly. Take 30 minutes and set the direction with God’s help.

Start with her later, meatier books

Since I started with her later books, the Blood Sorcery Bibles I & II and 26 Daemons, this earlier book felt like a scattered rehashing of her more cohesive later material. It is just a collection of quotes, however some of them are quite informative, funny, or clever. I'd start with the BSBs and then 26 Daemons and get this one if you want more Cagliastro after that.

Well done quote books are hard to come by

I got this book just after reading another one of Cagliastro's books. It is the kind of thing to read a little at a time, opening your mind and presenting a point of view you may not have previously thought of.

I would buy it again as a gift if someone needed to shine a new light on their lives.

Interesting Thoughts

Someone who has dealings with demons had better have a strong will, personality and sense of self. Accordingly Madame Cagliastro does not disappoint. An excellent primer on the mindset one must bring to working FOR EFFECT in magical realms where surrender is not an option and prisoners are not taken.
