Nice piano book of James Blunt song hits

First off, I think James Blunt is a master at his craft - that is singing songs with great intensity and feeling. He loves what he does and it shows in his music. Now, I play piano and I wanted of course to be able to play some of his songs for piano and I highly recommend this piano book for all those that love his music. It is written for beginner/intermediate players and will be a great addition to your repertoire of piano songs. Can't wait for another piano book by James B.

Trisha Ashley was born in St. Helens, Lancashire, and gave up her fascinating but time-consuming hobbies of house-moving and divorce a few years ago in order to settle in North Wales. She is a Sunday Times bestselling author.

Whimsical chick lit for the 40-something crowd

The plots are never the point with Trisha Ashley's novels, and A Winter's Tale is no exception. They are standard chick-lit fare, with girl meeting boy and facing obstacles to their relationship -- the classic narrative since Jane Austen helped create the genre.
And no, Trisha Ashley is no Jane Austen!
But her strong point, which to my mind raises her work well above the average chick lit novel (especially the increasingly self-conscious writings of, say, Jane Green, or the irritating Shopaholic novels), are Ashley's characters.
Here, her heroine is Sophy Winter, who unexpectedly inherits a stately mansion inhabited by two eccentric aunts and a hunky but grumpy garden designer. Her struggles to save the house by opening it to the public are the backdrop to the novel. But it's Sophy that grabs the reader's attention, and particularly her stubborn, independent and whimsical approach to her life. When an unwelcome suitor (not the gardener), tries to win her (and the stately mansion) by cramming an oversized diamond ring on her finger, Sophy doesn't simper. She yells at him, the dog bites his ankles and she resorts to soap to get the ring off.
Ashley's novels are far from great literature, and the plots are often thin (the reason I have rated this three stars, rather than four). But they are the literary equivalent of comfort food -- escapist fare for chilly winter days, complete with heroines who have lived long enough to know who they are and what they want from life. Refreshing...
I would start, however, with some of her earlier and stronger books: Every Woman for Herself or Singled Out.

Way too much detail

I have enjoyed a number of Trisha Ashley's books and the basics I was looking for were there: village life and small village characters whose life revolve around "the big house", quirky characters, understated romance and some snarky humor. But all this was counteracted by lots (and I do mean lots) of details about how the heroine went about cleaning the mansion she inherits. The heroine loves to clean but good heavens, there is WAY too much information about how she cleaned, what she cleaned, the special products used, etc. This took away from the light, fun story and suddenly what should have been an enjoyable read became a chore. The romance didn't really come across that well and as a result the dialogue at the end, when things were explained and wrapped up, seemed stilted and was a bit painful to read, and thus was not convincing at all. This is definitely not Ashley's best though it does deliver on the main thing I think her readers are looking for: the cosy feel of comfort reading. I will read more of her work.

Country house comedy

I bought this because I enjoyed Trisha Ashley's Twelve Days of Christmas, and I think I'm spotting some common themes: country houses, enigmatic sculptors, and fiercely independent, slightly snappish heroines. In this book, Sophy inherits a large house with money problems, and sets about making it profitable, with help and hindrance from a variety of relatives and local characters. Great fun.

About the Author

Giulio Fanti is associate professor of mechanical and thermal measurements at the Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Padua, Italy. After gaining experience in spatial structures, and also in tethered satellites and image analysis, he has directed since 1997 his interest to the Shroud to fill some gaps, especially with reference to the body image impressed in it, which is still scientifically inexplicable. He was responsible for a university research project concerning the most important relic of Christianity and has headed for more than 10 years the Shroud Science Group, a group of about 140 scientists dedicated to study of the relic. He has published more than 170 scientific works in international journals. He has authored 8 books and more than 50 scientific works on the Shroud.

Pierandrea Malfi holds a master’s degree with honors in mechanical engineering from the University of Padua. His thesis was based on the mechanical dating of textile fibers, whose results have also been published in scientific journals. He has set up and computerized the Antonio Maria Traversi Physics Museum of Marco Foscarini High School in Venice, Italy, of which he has been scientific curator for more than 10 years.

FANTI'S RESEARCH AND BOOK INSPIRED MY OWN SEARCH FOR THE TRUTH OF THE SHROUD

I read this book a few years ago when a friend of mine lent it to me. Thereafter, I ended up getting a copy of my own. The research by Professor Fanti was thought-provoking and eye-opening. It helped inspire my own cryptologic research project into a question that kept nagging at me: Did Christ's disciples encode the New Testament with hidden ciphers about the Shroud? My five year long project resulted in my non-fiction book about the amazing results I achieved that clearly showed the gospels were indeed enciphered with hundreds of clues about the Shroud. Had it not been for books like the Turin Shroud by Fanti, my book, Shroud Codes in the Bible, might never have been written.

Fanti has brought together into one place an excellent resource for those interested in learning about the Shroud of Turin. Not for nothing is the Shroud of Turin the most studied and scrutinized physical object on the planet in all of science. Increasingly, it is being demonstrated that the most advanced techniques available in the 21st century fail to emulate the measurable qualities and quantities characteristic of this relic. If you do not already have the information in this book from a wide range of scholars and analyses, then your savvy about it leaves something to be desired. Read it. Buy it. It's well worth the price of admission.

The author classifies a large range of artists in a well developed spectrum, the understanding and approach she offers to each style is fascinating. The concepts presented really made a turnaround on the way I shoot now, for the better (I think). A must have for those who are beyond shooting weddings, kids and puppies.

A bargain

This book has an interesting organization, with the chapters classifying artists according to their artistic vision or motivation. Unfortunately, the text does not do justice to this analytical approach with the description of photographs and photographers being mostly superficial. There isn't much of an attempt to link contemporary photography with its social and cultural environment.

However, what makes the book a real bargain are the photographs. You get to browse through the work of many of the important photographers of the last few decades in one place and to contrast them with one another. The small size of the reproductions is somewhat disappointing, but it is made up by the large number of photographs and the low price of the book. The printing and paper quality are good.

Outstanding

This is the best book I have seen so far on theories for sound design. I used it for my graduate design research thesis 4 years ago at Carnegie Mellon, and I am about to require it for my students at UT next week, for a course in sound design. Chion opened up so many new ideas for me on different ways that sound affects us. Like the book itself, the forward by Walter Murch (considered by many to be a hero in film sound design) is inspiring.
