This book is awesome, a gem in the series

This book is awesome, a gem in the series. While the plot moves forward as you might expect if you've read the previous ones (you should have read them before you read this), Fallen Angel gives us some powerful conflicts unseen in previous books. Unexpected heroes only add to the character of this book. Tying up the loose end of Ido gives us a little piece of mind and sets the stage for BAA: Last Order. Kaos's radio broadcast is a simple message said with feeling in case you ever need a motivational speech. This book is becoming more rare, hopefully reprints and used sales will be able to supply readers as time progresses.

I have been remiss...

Really, as a reviewer type person I should have reviewed all the Last Order books, not just 2 and 7. Be that as it may, I can now write a comprehensive review of the series till this point and its "major" plot thrusts.

The Last Order books have been filling in for the some-what rushed ending of Battle Angel book 9, a treasure though it was. Readers had yet to learn who Yoko really was, about her life on Mars, and the events of the past that led her to being dumped in the scrap pile. The short vision we did see had us believe Yoko was an a-moral terrorist type who fought for the wrong side in a war and was brought low by a totally unexplained ethereal enemy.

Now Yoko, aka Alita, is a fully formed character who lives, has emotions, as well as regrets and such. Although to this point Alita only see's Yoko in flashback, she now comes face to face with her past self as a actual personality. And she, in the seventh book, finally becomes one with her past. After 15 books(right? or is it 16?) that is a awesome plot evolution for long time readers.

This growth of Alita takes up the first section on the book and is well enlivened by a classic fight, the first between Alita and another Panzer Kunster. The rest of the book is taken up by the ZOT battles which, I found, to be equally well written and story progressive, even if not in the main plot. An underlying story of how even the best intentions lead to unintended results* is one which has present day resonance. In its second social attack, book seven not only illuminates the deadlieness of an innocent mind given too much power, it also highlights that creating something dark to defeat something dark still leaves you with something dark, whichever wins. All this boils down to a slow fight but a pleasant, if bloody, introspection. Well worth hitting the second half of the book for, critics aside.

As a personal note, I notice that many reviewers, whom I respect seeing as they obviously love these books enough to write about them, are dismissive of the sub plots in the Last Order books. That's fair, given these subplots have little to do with the original books and they keep these books from moving towards conclusion. However, I think Kishiro is smarter than he is being labled. The ZOT is laden with symbolizm and hidden meaning which seems lost on many. So while the main story only gets half the play, Kishiro's wonderfully cynical mind gets to speak out about what he really wants to say. And since these books are art, it seems only fair to cock our heads, look at it ascance, then make opinions based on the subject matter rather than the medium.

* By this I mean the squeaky clean image of the Stellar Nursery Society gets a shot in the kidney. All too often people stand for an ideal without truly weighing what their position leads to.

She's Back - And Twice As Bad!!!

Nova, the villainous researcher who spent much of the first Alita series foiling the efforts of the beautiful cyborg is back. This time with a different agenda. Equipped with the barest fragments of Alita's brain he remakes her, this time with an even better artificial body, the Imaginos. Alita awakens to a world in chaos - Nova has reveled that citizens of Tiphares have had their brains replaced with chips, and the overprotective guardian machines turn on the populace to conceal the secret.
Still created and drawn by Yukito Kishiro, this new series has all that magic of its predecessor. Battle Angel Alita remains a fine example of Manga that uses are to expand the imagination at the same time it entertains. For all the spellbinding action and violence, the driving factors behind the series remains the intangibles that separate human from non-human, and life from imitation.
For all that Alita is 'made' rather than born, she is clearly more human than the chip-brained adults of Tiphares, who see themselves as the perfection of the species. In the beginnings of a complex plot that pits adults against their children, Alita once again displays both her power and her compassion, We are also granted glimpses of Alita's origins - the promises of explanations that were never forthcoming in the initial series.
In a world where sequels are cheap and easy, it's nice to see the effort Kishiro and VIZ publishing have put together to create something even better than its origins. You won't be disappointed.

Great as Far As It Goes

This volume covers a lot of territory and the depth of coverage varies.

The strong points are:

1. The discussion of open-loop rendezvous maneuvers is excellent in general.

2. The discussion of required accuracies for rendezvous is generally quite good.

3. The book contains a lot of information on current and proposed/developing systems which is useful.

4. Appendix A on motion dynamics is good with the errors caveat below.

5. The entire book forms an excellent framework in which to think about rendezvous.

The weak points are:

1. There are a number of errors in the equations throughout the book.

2. Even when the equations are correct, the author is tepid at best in defining things like signs.

3. The guidance, navigation, and control sections and the GPS sections are broadbrush overviews containing mostly information copied from elsewhere such as handbooks. It is still useful from a systems point of view however.

4. The entire book is oriented towards rendezvous in near circular or circular orbits and the entire presentation rely's on the Clohessy-Wiltshire equations. Nothing wrong with that, but those looking for a discussion of coelliptic rendezvous. or the exact solution of Berreen and Crisp, or rendezvous around another planet or the moon without GPS/relative GPS, are going to be disappointed. There is not even a thought in any of those directions. The book is completed dominated by ISS rendezvous culture.

All in all, not a bad effort. Another edition later with updates and more advanced thinking about non-ISS rendezvous would not be out of place.

Awesome Indoor planting guide

I jumped in as soon as I saw thus 4 book bundle on growing plants indoors. It is well written with good descriptions and awesome pictures of what the plants look like. The section on herbs, just like the other books, was very informative. Not only did he give detailed descriptions on how to plant them and get a good crop, he also explained the health benefits you get from eating them. I'm starting off with black peppers and some other spices. I know exactly how to go about it!

A badass collection of poems.

I had the pleasure of reviewing this book before publication, and to say that I was "impressed" with Ruckus's writing is an understatement. The poems in this collection are relateable and universal; and at the same time, Ruckus ventures into territories you might never say aloud (or on page) yourself. So sure, this is not exactly a read for your 12-year-old daughter who is interested in exploring poetry; but it is a read for anyone who has ever had their heart broken, who has ever toyed with the world of online dating (yes you), who has ever felt a little less than secure about ANYTHING. This book is for anyone who has loved, for anyone who has lost. And anyone who just plain loves badass poetry.

Absolutely incredible. I had the pleasure of sitting in a coffee shop like a good little hipster as I read this beautiful compilation of personal stories through poetry. So much of modern poetry seems to try to appeal to a mass market, but what I've come to love about Keith's work is that each story is a heartfelt telling of what happened to him. This was not written to be loved by everyone who reads it; however, I loved it, and I'm sure you'll be able to find many of his lyrical scrawlings enjoyable.

I was always skeptical of live poetry readings, and especially poetry books. Seems like a good opportunity to listen to hipsters trading tips on proper scarves to wear in the middle of summer. But hearing the words from this book completely changed my outlook on life, love, depression, thriving, surviving, and everything in-between. Perfect for the more well versed (get it???????) or for the beginner. Truly spectacular.

Great for the money

I have used this product since Studio 8 and produce proam video for my church. It is generally intuitive, incredibly powerful as it comes with more effects than I'll ever use. I didn't give it five stars simply because there is some room for improvement in the UI. I would recommend it to the advanced amateur as well as the starting out, part time pro.

Beautiful Arrangements of Great Movie Themes

I'm playing through most of these pieces as my primary focus for piano study this year. There is significant variation in the difficulty of the pieces. I had to give up on the Forrest Gump theme but got the Exodus Song under my fingers in a couple weeks. All of the arrangements so far are beautifully composed, evoking the great themes from great movies long ago while at the same time giving a fresh arrangement that makes the Phillip Keveren version stand out.
