Good Introduction to the SDLC

Decent book on the SDLC. It has some flaws here and there (to be fair, systems design is not set in stone). Generally it is a useful introduction that leads you through the Analysis and Design of a Computer System.

It does not require you to know code and should be easy to understand even for someone who does not have a technical background.

I gave it 4 stars since it has a high price and sometimes confuses. It also tends to be really dry at points.

Robert Paul Wolff was born in 1933 in New York City. He was educated at Harvard University, receiving his doctorate in philosophy in 1957. Following a brief period of service in the military, he taught at Harvard, The University of Chicago, Columbia University, and the University of Massachusetts, from which he retired in 2008 after a career spanning half a century. Wolff is the author or editor of twenty-three books, which have been translated into sixteen languages. He is best known around the world for a short book titled In Defense of Anarchism, which has most recently appeared in Croatian, Malaysian, and Korean. For a somewhat more extended biography, you may consult the article on him on Wikipedia.com. Those who want to know every last detail of his life may read his eight hundred page, three volume, autobiography, which is posted on box.net and is accessible from his blog: www.robertpaulwolff.blogspot.com . Wolff is married to his childhood sweetheart, Susan, and lives in Chapel Hill, NC. He has two sons: Patrick Gideon Wolff, a famous International Chess Grandmaster who now is the Managing Director of a hedge fund, Grandmaster Capital, and Tobias Barrington Wolff, a leading Gay Rights legal activist and Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania. Wolff has one cat, named Christmas Eve.

In 1990, after several years of activity in the movement to end apartheid in South Africa and liberate the South African people, Wolff founded University Scholarships for South African Students, which has in the past two decades helped more than one thousand five hundred young Black men and women in South Africa get a higher education. In March, 2011, Wolff was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of the Western Cape in South Africa in recognition of his work for South African higher education.

Dear Colleagues,

With this eleventh edition, About Philosophy approaches the completion of its fourth decade. Now, we philosophers are trained to view questions under the aspect of eternity, sub specie aeternitatis, so forty years is as nothing to us. But though we live with the eternal, our students very definitely do not! Despite our best efforts to remain au courant, we cannot keep up with the ever-changing world in which they live. Just this past semester, I mentioned Gilbert and Sullivan’s light operas to a class of bright graduate students, and they looked at me blankly. As Heraclitus reminded us a mere two and a half millennia ago, "you can never step into the same river twice, for other waters are ever flowing onto you."

In a continuing effort to accommodate About Philosophy to the mercurial frame of reference of our students, I have regularly replaced old "Contemporary Applications" with new ones. Almost that entire portion of the text has been completely redone for this edition. My favorite is the Contemporary Application for the chapter on the Philosophy of Art, which features a painting done by a dog. I have looked at that painting right side up, upside down, and sideways, and I have to confess that I cannot see how it differs from the abstract expressionist paintings now commanding six and seven figure prices at art auctions.

Anyone my age grew up in a linear world of books, but my grandchildren inhabit a multi-dimensional world of hypertexts. They move easily from text to text, site to site, linking ideas and texts in ways I never would have thought to do.

I am confident that we have struck the right balance between the eternal and the fleeting. The basic philosophical ideas and arguments are still here — they do not change. But this material will now be available to our students in ways that they are comfortable with. I look forward to hearing from you abut how it all works together.

Wolff Keeps You Interested!

Philosophy can be a rather daunting subject. It requires a lot of self reflection, and Wolff does a fantastic job of describing situations to guide you through learning to be more inquisitive about the world. While this textbook was assigned reading, I felt like I was reading a book for pleasure. I got through the chapters easily.

Extremely hard topic, but a MUST READ by both parent and teens!

As a parent, I highly recommend all parents and teens to read this book. We never know when something like this can happen to our own children. Allison did a fantastic job throughout describing an extremely hard topic for the reader to truly appreciate. Her attention to detail on May’s change in behavior can only help us parents to see even the slightest changes in our own children.

The author certainly opens the door for us to discuss rape and the results of it; especially for the victims and the gamut of emotions they experience. I look forward to reading more of Allison’s books.

I just want to say that this has easily become one of my top reads of 2015. The Choice is beautifully written, and so powerful with its message. My interpretation of the message (every book has a different message for each of its readers) is that time heals everything. Life can be cruel and cold, but with time events can be reflected upon and a sense of peace can be created. Most of the time we think time is working against us, because we never know what tomorrow will bring. Time has lost our appreciation when really it deserves our utmost respect. Has anyone heard of the saying, "Time heals all wounds?" I have no idea who said it, but whoever said it was right. The time might be two days, a few months, or 10 years, but there will come a day when the past can be let go. I read The Choice from start to finish in one seating, and it left me sitting in stunned silence. I was exhausted after I read this book in the best possible way ever! Kennedy takes your emotions on one hell of a ride called reality.

The Choice is a story about a 17 year old girl, May, who is raped and conceives the rapist's child. She keeps the rape a secret, and tries to process through the emotions she is feeling by herself. Then she struggles with whether or not she should abort her unborn child. Kennedy tackles two tough and emotional topics, and does so tactfully. She shows no favor to either side of each topic, if anything she includes every side.

I loved the style The Choice was written in. Throughout the book, May in present day reflects on how she is now, and then reflects on what happened when she was raped and the days that followed. This particular formatting allows us to see where she starts with all the emotions and years later how she has grown and healed.

To be honest with you guys, this review isn't giving any justice to this book. The book drips with raw emotions. You feel May's pains and struggles. You will shed tears and your heart will be jerked in all different directions. When you finally start thinking that everything will be okay something else is thrown into the pot causing everything to go wrong again. The Choice covers difficult and controversial topics, but I encourage you to choose to read this book. Kennedy's writing walks you side by side with May, and makes you wish you could actually be there for her in real life.

This book even though covering tough subjects, rape and abortion, was amazing. The story was heart wrenching and written so well. An emotional read that will stay with me for a long time. I will be recommending this book to many of my friends who like to read about real life stories and topics.

I received this book for early review through LibraryThing giveaway but this in no way swayed my rating and review of this book. It is truly a five star book!
