This newly revised best-seller teaches the practice of process control for the wet process industries. It stresses the study of real, imperfect processes rather than system theory and gives guidance on how engineers can best apply their own experience, intuition, and knowledge of the particular process. The text summarizes the general characteristics of processes and control loops and discusses feedback control and its nuances. The latter part of the book addresses advanced control techniques. New topics covered in the book include tuning feedback control loops, multiplicative feedforward control, other control techniques (e.g., split-range control, cross-limiting control, floating control, techniques for increasing effective valve rangeability, and time proportioning control), and more. The reader will learn the bottom-line benefits of these advanced strategies. Examples from the commercial world are given. Suitable for beginning or experienced process control engineers.

Not for beginners but still very good
By Psycho4sleds
This is a very complicated subject and the author does a very good job of presenting the information. I do want to stress that this is not a book for beginners. There are equations in this book that involve advanced calculus.
This book is really better suited for engineering students than for someone like myself that is just getting into process control. If you do decide to purchase this book than I would suggest using it in conjunction with PID control videos on youtube I was able to really put together the puzzle pieces once I started using them toghether.
The reason that I gave a three star revue is not for the information but for the fact that the book fell apart after about two weeks of reading it. I guess the glue they used for the binding was no good.

From an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control
By David De Sousa
This book presents a practical approach to process control for the chemical, refining, pulp and paper, utilities and similar industries.

The book serves both the beginning and experienced control systems engineer. For the beginner it iniatily presents very simple concepts. For the experienced, it develops these initial concepts so as to provide deeper understanding or new insights into familiar concepts.

The book is distributed in the following way:

- Introduction.

- Mathematical background, diagrams and terminology.

- Process and control loops characteristics.

- PID control.

- Tuning feedback control loops.

- Self tuning.

- Advanced regulatory control.

- Cascade control.

- Ratio control.

- Feedforward control.

- Override control.

- Control for interacting process loops.

- Dead-time compensation and model-based control.

- Multivariable model predictive control.

- Other control techniques.

Africans in America: America's Journey through Slavery, by Charles Johnson, Patricia Smith, WGBH Research Team

A riveting narrative history of America, from the 1607 landing in Jamestown to the brink of the Civil War, Africans in America tells the shared history of Africans and Europeans as seen through the lens of slavery. It is told from the point of view of the Africans who arrived in shackles and endured the terrible dichotomy of this new land founded on the ideal of liberty but dedicated to the perpetuation of slavery. Meticulously researched, this book weaves together the experiences of the colonists, slaves, free and fugitive blacks, and abolitionists to present an utterly original document, a startling and moving drama of the effects of slavery and racism on our conflicted national identity. The result transcends history as we were taught it and transforms the way we see our past.

Amazon.com Review
This extraordinary book--the accompanying volume to the PBS series--looks at the history of slavery in the United States with an honesty that reveals both horror and heroism in the common humanity of all Americans. Uncovering the indigenous history of African slavery and the involvement of Arab and European nations, it then traces the journey of enslaved Africans across the "Middle Passage" of the Atlantic to the Caribbean and America. Charles Johnson's spellbinding fictional narratives beautifully evoke the feeling of times and places, such as the Haitian revolution or the plantation slave society. In "The Transmission," two captives in the bottom of a slave ship try to preserve their heritage. "Oboto quietly sang to his brother--in a language their captors could not understand--how their people long ago had navigated the New World ... on and on like a tapestry, Oboto unfurled their past, rituals, and laws in songs and riddles..."

Poet/journalist Patricia Smith's historical anecdotes and references to legendary African American heroes (including Olaudah Equiano, Harriet Tubman, and Frederick Douglass), juxtaposed with rare documents, letters, slave advertisements, slave-ship cargo diagrams, and paintings, provide evidence of the African American fight for freedom, from the black soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War to the Underground Railroad to the return to combat in the Civil War. When emancipation finally came, Smith writes, "the newly liberated slaves sang for themselves, for their new country, and for the thousands upon thousands of Africans ripped from the clutches of home." --Eugene Holley Jr.

From Publishers Weekly
Designed to complement a PBS series of the same name, this is much more than a companion book. A monumental research effort wed with fine writing has produced a work that can stand on its own. Studded with a dozen short stories by Johnson, the NBA-winning author of Middle Passage, and filled with arresting period illustrations, it is ultimately shaped by journalist/poet Smith's (Big Towns, Big Talk) beautiful narrative. There is plenty to praise, in particular the drawing together of several slave narratives and other accounts to flesh out the true picture of slave lives in this country. The ugly reality of the "triangle trade" and the initial confusion of newly enslaved Africans are fully realized, while the apparent hypocrisy and contradictory reasoning of the Founding Fathers is given a human face. The impact of the Caribbean experience, America's western expansion, and black abolitionism are also illuminated. Perhaps the most riveting moments begin early in the journey, at the point when slavery becomes synonymous with blackness in colonial America. Heartbreaking setbacks include the forced migration of slave communities deeper and deeper south, as well as the kidnapping and forced enslavement of free children from the streets of Philadelphia. The struggle of whites against slavery and the divisions within the abolitionist movement are discussed frankly, another in a list of refreshing surprises. While American society can be seen as the logical end of this dreadful institution, the story of all those who struggled to end it is indeed liberating. Although lavishly illustrated, this is not a coffee-table book. It deserves a curious and enlightened reader.

From School Library Journal
Grade 10 UpRead with tender emotion and evoking tremendous feelings of sympathy, Africans in America presents the story of slavery in America from the perspective of those who lived it. The original book was written by Charles Johnson and Patricia Smith (Harcourt, 1998) as a companion to the PBS TV series. The writing is clear, but often strikingly beautiful. The six hours of tape, narrated by Iona Morris, covers the significant events in African American history from the horrible slave revolt in Haiti to the development of the cotton gin to independent Black churches to Nat Turner, Amistead and Harpers Ferry. Significant historical persons are mentioned. But most poignant are the diaries, letter excerpts, historical documents and stories of everyday people. For example, Harriet lived for seven years in a crawl space in order to avoid her abusive master, but she emerged grateful for freedom. These riveting tapes are a necessary addition to existing material about slavery for students in high school and above. The tapes and/or book should be available in school libraries for use in history classes, and in public libraries for research projects.Alice OGrady, Jackson High School, Mill Creek, WA

THIS IS A "MUST" READING FOR ALL AFRICANS
By owerri@msn.com
I am a Nigerian born American, and have lived in the US for 40-years. This is the first book I have ever read from the SLAVES point of view. I have been married for 30-years to an American born African American, and this book, for the first time, explains to me why my 91-year old mother-in-law who lives with us could not watch the movie "Color Purple" or the PBS broadcast of Africans in America. I can now associate the Black American in the street as someone from my village in Nigeria. I am humbled by the humiliation and suffering which was perpetrated on my people for no other reason than the color of their skin. This book must be read by all recent African immigrtants to the US, all heads of African Governments, as well as all editors of African news organizations, in the hope that the respective African country shall adopt this book as a required reading in African schools. I make this recommendation because any history of slavery, whatsoever, as taught in the African schools today, was written in the last 100-years, with the point of view of the SLAVEMASTER. The respective modern day African country has no record of Slavery in America from 1450 to 1900. Worse yet, all the conditions that lead to tribal conflict and genocide exist today in many parts of Africa. Those who have no sense of history will repeat the mistakes of yester-years. This should be the beginning of a new dialogue among Africans and African Americans.

More content, less style
By A Customer
I have started reading Charles Johnson, Patricia Smith, and the WGBH Series Research Team, "African in American: America's Journey through Slavery" (New York: Harcourt Brace & Co., 1998), and so far I am shocked and disappointed. While the book has a lot of good information, it contains inconsistencies, fictional material not marked a such. The only citation thus far has been to quotes from primary sources; all other material, including a long quote from historian David Northrup, whom I have used in my research on slavery, is not cited. Perhaps this is because Johnson and Smith are fictional writers and journalist, not historians. The result is a well-written, engaging book that omits important facts, is inconsistent, and glosses over debated subjects with no evidence or citation.
For example, the authors state at one point that 20 million Africans were captured, then states the more recent and widely accepted figure of 10 to 12 million, and then states 20 million again. They also state that the Portuguese dominated the trade at one point, then the Spainish without explaining the change. What really got my goat was that first thing, they try to dismiss Africans enslaving Africans as benign, using broad statements, without any critical examiniation, no examples to back it up, and not a single citation! They admit that Whites did not originally get Africans slaves out of racism, and hint at some similarities between White and Black experiences in how they came to the Americas, but they needed to explore that more thoroughly and directly. More effort could have been put into the facts and the analysis, and less into creative writing and style.

A must for everyone who says they are an American
By C. J. Hunter
I just finished reading this book and I was amazed, angered, heart-broken, and thrilled through it all. I was amazed how one group of people managed to survived all the indignities heaped upon them by their "masters" and still managed to know that this peculiar condition (slavery) was wrong. I was angered how one group of people misused the bible & God's word, proposed baseless scientific theories, and rationalized their way to exploit the millions of Africans and later black American born slaves to enrich their lives. I was heart-broken to read of all the injustices done to these slaves, the break-up of families, the rapes, the lynching, and the treatment of them as less than animals. I was thrilled that throughout this book, there arose individuals, from both sides of the racial divide that knew slavery was wrong to their very core. How they strove in their own ways, be it through violence, be it through the pulpit or be it through risking their own lives in trying to rid this fledging nation from such an amoral situation. This book opened my eyes to how the founding fathers failed to grasp how to handle this slave issue and how it is the basis for the social ills we face in this day and age. This is a must read for all Americans to see how through our fight for "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" we trampled upon those same ideas for another group of people whose only difference was the color of their skin. This book should make you pause for a moment to ponder the question, what if things were differently. If the vile treatment done to those individual so long was done humanely or never done at all, how much different would our nation be today. Or, if this peculiar condition was allowed to exist through the years even to this day, would our nation be held in the high esteem it is today? This book has reinforced me to view each person I meet on their own individual merits and not judge them by their color, as was done to my ancestors so long ago.

"Gardner's texts have always allowed the students a more intellectual look at the contexts surrounding the art and the time period. These texts allow for a condensed approach, without the 'dumbing down' that is found in other art history texts."

Bought it for class but am keeping it for LIFE!
By Alto_Girl
Kleiner makes Art History enjoyable, virtually painless, and easy to understand. He loves what he does and it shows through his engaging text, anecdotes, descriptions, and concise definitions. He gives one just enough information without it becoming a sensory overload with facts and verbatim. I would highly recommend any of his books to have in the home as reference. My teenage sons even were perusing through some of the pages, commenting, reading about the artists, and we became engaged in some nice conversations! Considering they are normal, teenage boys, complete with attitudes and video games on the brain when not doing homework, I was pleased.

great book
By Cheryl A. Wolverton
I only took this class because my counselor suggested it. I needed one more class. I have loved the class. But more than that, I have actually enjoyed this book. It doesn't go into such detail that my eyes glaze over. Believe me, I re-read portions of the chapters every night (according to what chapter we are in during class). I also have the study tools online. To be absorbed in it so much one would think you would get tired or bored.

But quite the opposite. You find out what is going on during the time period that influenced the art and actually watch the art developing and growing into the next phase of art. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. If I hadn't I would not have taken a second semester.

Honestly, I can see them breaking this book up into 3 or 4 semesters it is so rich and filled with details. But I have learned so much of a world I just shrugged off before this book. It has changed my entire view on the art world and classical art.

Wow. Never too old to learn (I'm nearly 50 and back in school)something new or find a new love of art.

Which sounds funny considering I'm an author. But hey, you can be an artist and not love art if you haven't studied it...but that has totally changed, I love this history of art and will definitely be shaped by what I have learned.

Good as a study guide accompanying class lectures
By zevnik
The book is a bit dry and dull and sometimes I don't understand what is being talked about (e.g. all the structural elements of Gothic cathedrals, despite diagrams). But there are ample pictures of the art, which is good (though sometimes they're too small so you can't see the details which are being written about in the text). My professor follows this book closely, so it's good in this regard. I read the chapter, then she elaborates and shows slides in class further elaborating and explaining what I've read. This is not an art history book I'd read on my own for pleasure.

A Crime So Monstrous, by Benjamin Skinner

To be a moral witness is perhaps the highest calling of journalism, and in this unforgettable, highly readable account of contemporary slavery, author Benjamin Skinner travels around the globe to personally tell stories that need to be told -- and heard.

As Samantha Power and Philip Gourevitch did for genocide, Skinner has now done for modern-day slavery. With years of reporting in such places as Haiti, Sudan, India, Eastern Europe, The Netherlands, and, yes, even suburban America, he has produced a vivid testament and moving reportage on one of the great evils of our time.

There are more slaves in the world today than at any time in history. After spending four years visiting a dozen countries where slavery flourishes, Skinner tells the story, in gripping narrative style, of individuals who live in slavery, those who have escaped from bondage, those who own or traffic in slaves, and the mixed political motives of those who seek to combat the crime.

Skinner infiltrates trafficking networks and slave sales on five continents, exposing a modern flesh trade never before portrayed in such proximity. From mega-harems in Dubai to illicit brothels in Bucharest, from slave quarries in India to child markets in Haiti, he explores the underside of a world we scarcely recognize as our own and lays bare a parallel universe where human beings are bought, sold, used, and discarded. He travels from the White House to war zones and immerses us in the political and flesh-and-blood battles on the front lines of the unheralded new abolitionist movement.

At the heart of the story are the slaves themselves. Their stories are heartbreaking but, in the midst of tragedy, readers discover a quiet dignity that leads some slaves to resist and aspire to freedom. Despite being abandoned by the international community, despite suffering a crime so monstrous as to strip their awareness of their own humanity, somehow, some enslaved men regain their dignity, some enslaved women learn to trust men, and some enslaved children manage to be kids. Skinner bears witness for them, and for the millions who are held in the shadows.

In so doing, he has written one of the most morally courageous books of our time, one that will long linger in the conscience of all who encounter it, and one that -- just perhaps -- may move the world to constructive action.

From Publishers Weekly
Today there are more slaves than at any time in history, according to journalist Skinner's report on current and former slaves and slave dealers. Skinner's travelogue-cum-indictment focuses most sharply on Haiti, Sudan, Romania and India, and is interspersed with a detailed account of the work of John Miller, director of the State Department Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, or America's antislavery czar. Skinner reiterates that sexual trafficking is only one component of slavery, but devotes the bulk of this book (when it is not following Miller's State Department career) to this issue. The text teeters toward the travelogue, taking the reader to Dubai's most notorious brothel and Skinner's adventures in pos[ing] as a client to talk to women... [or] as an arms dealer to talk to traffickers. Nevertheless, Skinner's story merits reading, and not just because the cause is noble and the detail often fascinating, such as the moral complications of Christian Solidarity International's redemption or purchase of 85,000 slaves' freedom. Skinner's account of the internal workings of the State Department and the deep links to faith-based antislavery groups and their special interests is seriously newsworthy and, at times, moving. Review
"An impassioned expos of a thriving slave economy in the world's poorest regions...An important, consciousness-raising book."--Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Rigorously investigated and fearlessly reported, A Crime So Monstrous is a passionate and thorough examination of the appalling reality of human bondage in today's world. In his devastating narrative, Ben Skinner boldly casts light on the unthinkable, yet thriving, modern-day practice of slavery, exposing a global trade in human lives. The abuses detailed in these pages are repugnant, but there is hope to be found: by giving voice to the victims, Skinner helps restore their dignity and makes crucial strides toward closing this shameful chapter in history." --Bill Clinton

"In his fierce, bold determination to see the lives of modern-day slaves up close, Benjamin Skinner reminds me of the British abolitionist of two hundred years ago, Zachary Macaulay, who once traveled on a slave ship across the Atlantic, taking notes. Skinner goes everywhere, from border crossings to brothels to bargaining sessions with dealers in human beings, to bring us this vivid, searing account of the wide network of human trafficking and servitude which spans today's globe." -- Adam Hochschild

"A great storyteller, Skinner brings the whole underworld of traffickers and their victims to life. At the same time, he shows how complex the phenomenon really is, and why the solutions of would-be abolitionists in this country have proven misguided or simply futile." -- Frances FitzGerald

"A Crime So Monstrous is a remarkably brave and unflinching piece of reportage and storytelling. E. Benjamin Skinner bears witness, sharing stories so unsettling, so neglected, so chilling they will leave you shaking with anger. This should be required reading for policy makers around the world -- and, for that matter, anyone concerned about the human condition." -- Alex Kotlowitz

"Ben Skinner does a great public service by exposing the massive scope of human trafficking in the world today. I appreciate his chapter on the heroic role Ambassador John Miller played in getting the U.S. government to stand against this evil." -- U.S. Senator John McCain

"This book exposes the horrors of modern-day slavery and human trafficking, demanding attention to an issue that has for too long hidden in the shadows. Skinner's narrative takes us many different places around the world, but can lead to only one conclusion: The U.S. must do more to end this suffering." -- U.S. Senator Russ Feingold

Enriching source which offers insights on various forms of human traffikcing in the world.
By Hugo Gloss
Right now I am in the middle of the book so I can review only the first half. However I found it very enriching and interestingly written. The chapters of this book are written from the "first person view" based on his personal experiences from different locations around the globe. However he also adds interesting facts, outputs from various researches and references on newspaper articles.

During his journey to different places plagued by human trafficking he tells us stories of concrete victims, describes "modus operandi" of local traffickers, the local situation in general and also the effort made by the modern abolitionists.

I highly reccomend this book for everyone interested in the topic of HT as a enriching source which offers insights on various forms of human traffikcing in the world.

Incredibly well-researched, but at times slow
By margieebee
First of all, I certainly learned a great deal from this book. Skinner does an excellent job of providing of a sample of the different types of modern-day slavery that are present worldwide, without exclusively limiting himself or the book to solely sex trafficking or solely agricultural laborers.
At times I couldn't put this book down; I found the chapters on Haiti's child slaves and involuntary prostitution in Eastern Europe particularly engrossing. However, other chapters like those that were more history-oriented detailing the US's in/action on the issues are incredibly fact heavy (names, dates, places), and because of that, were incredibly slow. As someone with little previous knowledge on the topic as a whole, I ended up skimming pages on, say, the history of the Sudan People's Liberation Army. To me, this heavily detracted from the more passionate chapters where Skinner describes his travels and encounters (which are impressive in number) with those enslaved around the world.
Overall, I definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in an in-depth look at an important human rights issue with the qualifier that there are certainly some chapters that can be skimmed.

Magnificently written investigation on a stunningly horrific topic
By Robby Barthelmess
This is probably one of the most interesting and well-written books that I have ever read. Skinner is a brilliant author as well as a butt-kicking journalist. His experiences, interviews, and personal connections are completely shared within this book. I was shocked at the experiences that he describes in the work and I was constantly impressed by his well thought out approach to handling such a difficult topic. This truly is a masterpiece. In fact, about a week after finishing it, the message of the book was still sitting in my brain and I was prompted to e-mail Mr. Skinner and thank him for his work.

I am going to buy copies of this book and give it to people interested in the topic of human trafficking. This is a must read everyone.

A biblical discussion on being wronged
By John H Watson
The book offers an interpretation of the bible's teachings on how to approach life after you have been wronged.

This book was not without utility as it directs you to biblical stories to offer guidance. The challenge I had with the book was looking past all the biased comments and opinions (the preaching) that had nothing to do with the topic at hand.

I found myself thinking this book would be better directed to a pastor or minister looking for source materials so he/ she was better prepared to counsel church members or in preparation for a sermin. I did not feel like the intension of the book was to help the reader, rather to convey the opinion of the minister who wrote the book.

I personally found the book light on helpful content, although I did find some of the stories thought provoking and helpful and I know I would not have referenced these stories on my own.

To a person who is trying to recover, unless you are specifically looking for a biblical discussion on forgiveness, I would select something else.

New York Times Bestseller

What happens when you eat an apple? The answer is vastly more complex than you imagine.

Every apple contains thousands of antioxidants whose names, beyond a few like vitamin C, are unfamiliar to us, and each of these powerful chemicals has the potential to play an important role in supporting our health. They impact thousands upon thousands of metabolic reactions inside the human body. But calculating the specific influence of each of these chemicals isn’t nearly sufficient to explain the effect of the apple as a whole. Because almost every chemical can affect every other chemical, there is an almost infinite number of possible biological consequences.

And that’s just from an apple.

Nutritional science, long stuck in a reductionist mindset, is at the cusp of a revolution. The traditional “gold standard” of nutrition research has been to study one chemical at a time in an attempt to determine its particular impact on the human body. These sorts of studies are helpful to food companies trying to prove there is a chemical in milk or pre-packaged dinners that is “good” for us, but they provide little insight into the complexity of what actually happens in our bodies or how those chemicals contribute to our health.

In The China Study, T. Colin Campbell (alongside his son, Thomas M. Campbell) revolutionized the way we think about our food with the evidence that a whole food, plant-based diet is the healthiest way to eat. Now, in Whole, he explains the science behind that evidence, the ways our current scientific paradigm ignores the fascinating complexity of the human body, and why, if we have such overwhelming evidence that everything we think we know about nutrition is wrong, our eating habits haven’t changed.

Whole is an eye-opening, paradigm-changing journey through cutting-edge thinking on nutrition, a scientific tour de force with powerful implications for our health and for our world.

From Publishers Weekly
Campbell's follow-up to his best-selling The China Study is more of the same, in the best way. He continues his quest to convince people that "the ideal human diet looks like this: Consumer plant-based foods in forms as close to their natural state as possible...eat a variety of vegetables, fruits, raw nuts and seeds, beans and legumes, and whole grains." The entirety of the book is a passionate and convincing case for that ideal diet. Campbell has not written a book of diet tips, or even provided recipes. In fact, at times the book delves so deeply into scientific process— for example, explaining how cancer develops or how metabolism works—that many may find themselves having to read slowly to understand his point. Yet he makes the case that Americans are too prone to take pills to solve health issues (and doctors too prone to prescribe them) as a result of "reductionist thinking". His years of scientific study and calm, measured tone are highly convincing, making a firm case that changing one's diet is the best way to assure good health. Readers will be inclined to put down their processed food snacks once they read what could be a life-changer of a book. (May)

Review
''After reading The China Study and drastically changing my diet toward the more whole food, plant-based diet recommended by Dr. Campbell, my career numbers shot up when they were supposed to be declining. What You'll Learn in Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition
By Allen Scott
"History is a race between education and catastrophe" -HG Wells, quoted in Whole.

As T. Colin Campbell writes, Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition is built on two basic insights: "First, nutrition is the master key to human health. Second, what most of us think of as proper nutrition--isn't." While for many (though, alas, still the minority) this isn't news, showing why this is the case with a carefully crafted, well-researched thoroughness is what makes this a signature T. Colin Campbell book. As anyone who has read The China Study knows, this MIT-trained, 50-plus year veteran of nutritional research and politics packs a crisp and well-trained punch. His power comes from his clarity of expression and the thoroughness of his research. Campbell builds his thesis with tight reasoning, backed by solid research that considers the big picture. That's why, even if you feel like you don't need convincing, it's great to have the data and clear rationale beyond what may feel intuitive to you; that is, that a whole foods, plant-based diet is the healthiest diet there is and our current nutritional-medical complex is harming millions and millions by disguising that nutritional fact (did you know that pharmaceutical companies spend considerably more on political lobbying than defense contractors?).

If you've read The China Study, Campbell's important bestseller, you'll be familiar with themes in Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition. But the focus is different. As Campbell writes, "The China Study focused on the evidence that tells us the whole foods, plant-based diet is the healthiest human diet. Whole focuses on why it's been so hard to bring that evidence to light -- and on what still needs to happen for real change to take place."

Much of the book lies in the difference between reductionism and holism. "If you are a reductionist," writes Campbell (p. 49), "you believe that everything in the world can be understood if you understand all its component parts. A wholist, on the other hand, believes that the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts. That's it: the entire debate in a nutshell." Much of the confusion the public has about the basic healthy way to eat is based on small studies that highlight a little something, but miss the bigger picture. Campbell has the research experience and brain power to tie it all together.

If there is one issue I have with the book, it is that Campbell doesn't really look at our individual tendency to rationalize and how that dovetails with the confusion created by the food and medical industries. That is, while it's true that a plethora of confusing and overwhelming information makes it difficult to hear loud and clear the truth about a whole foods plant-based diet, even many who are convinced it is the best way to eat, don't end up eating that way. Why? Because sugar, fat, meat, and junk food taste yummy (at least they do until you break the habit/s, and then they usually taste too much). In fact, they taste so good that most people end up kinda, sorta downplaying the consequence of indulging and are only too happy (unconsciously) to be bolstered by noisy and confusing nutritional headlines. Or, to twist the classic expression a bit: "the spirit is weak because the flesh is willing." For that reason, this is an important book: it helps bolster the resolve of anyone who kind of knows a whole foods approach is the way to go. And for those that don't, this book is a clear and easy to read education. This is definitely an valuable book that I hope is widely read.

Explains why The China Study is not mainstream
By GskFn
The gist of T. Colin Campbell's new book, Whole, is this. After publishing his radical landmark The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted And the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss, And Long-term Health in 2005, let's suppose what he reported there is true. Eight years later, why hasn't that information and perspective broken through to more widespread awareness? Why hasn't your doctor or dietitian told you about it, or heard of it, or given it serious consideration? Why haven't school lunches changed across the board? Whole gives answers.

Three p-words permeate Campbell's thesis here: profits, power, and paradigms. Power and profits drive the big businesses of livestock and processed food, Campbell argues. For elaboration on how the processed food industry influences people's eating habits against public health while in pursuit of sales and profits, I recommend Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us (2013) or The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite (2009). More controversially perhaps, Campbell also argues that profit motives fuel the chase for pills, patents, and procedures in "health care" or as Campbell calls it, the "disease care" industries of pharmaceuticals, hospitals, and medical practitioners. Registered dietitians may be compromised too, as their influential trade association, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, receives major funding from the junk food business including Coca-Cola, Hershey, PepsiCo, Mars, and Unilever (that covers several major ice cream brands), as well as the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and the National Dairy Council, among others. (p. 271) The food and health care industries also buy power and influence by funding, in part, the careers of politicians, food regulators, and media outlets (including both popular media and some scientific journals) (p. 181-262). That's a big argument, and Campbell states it earnestly. He looks at, "all the political maneuvering and financial pressure...a version of reality shaped more by the profit agendas of Big Pharma, supplement makers, hospitals, surgeons, and suppliers of processed food and industrial meat and dairy than the truth." (p. 261)

But what about science? Don't the health sciences uphold an objective space where research like Campbell's can get a proper hearing among fair-minded truth seekers? Here Campbell covers a lot of ground. Whole unpacks Campbell's frustration with food sciences that drive for answers in small elements of biochemistry, often dismissing or putting up stiff resistance to studies at the level of major dietary patterns, lifestyles, and community-level differences in health outcomes (p. 45-164). Campbell knows from personal experience. He has contributed to food science both at the minute level of biochemistry, and also at the lifestyle and community levels like a medical sociologist would do, as The China Study makes clear.

Campbell's account in Whole may serve as vivid material for science studies. This is a field where sociologists and philosophers grapple with questions of how human foibles, careerism, and powerful interests sometimes distort and inhibit the advancement of science, and how new theories occasionally burst through to scientific acceptance despite formidable resistance. Campbell deploys the concept of scientific "paradigms" in food studies. Scientists cluster their investigations and share basic assumptions within a broad current of thought, or paradigm, the thinking goes, for as long as the prevailing paradigm seems productive, until one day the paradigm runs out of answers and gives way to challengers. In our time, Campbell suggests, the paradigm in nutrition is that animal foods are healthy sources of key nutrients that call for microbiological research; and the paradigm in medicine is that disease is to be cured through pills and procedures that call for biochemistry in pharmaceuticals, biotechnological engineering, and surgical protocols. The notion that medical and nutritional sciences, or any science, organizes into theoretical paradigms that hold sway during periods of "normal science" springs from Thomas Kuhn's launching pad for the field of science studies, first published in 1962, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions: 50th Anniversary Edition. T. Colin Campbell goes further, intimating that scientific grant makers should promote a more appropriate distribution of financial resources in health-related studies, in order to breed a research environment that would admit a variety of approaches, even if they contradict the main thrust (p. 214-217). His thinking comports well with some recent, socially minded philosophers of science, especially Miriam Solomon's excellent brief, Social Empiricism (Bradford Books) (2001).

If you haven't read The China Study, I would recommend that first (and The China Study may be all you want or need). The China Study spells out the many health benefits of whole foods, plant-based eating in Campbell's view; and what is the research that brought him to believe that; and what's wrong with animal foods. Or, for a captivating show of it on your tv screen, you can see T. Colin Campbell speaking prominently in the outstanding documentary film, Forks Over Knives.

If you want to know how exactly to go about eating a whole foods plant-based diet, then Whole is not the place to turn. But I can recommend some very good books for that: The Starch Solution: Eat the Foods You Love, Regain Your Health, and Lose the Weight for Good!, Forks Over Knives - The Cookbook: Over 300 Recipes for Plant-Based Eating All Through the Year, and Everyday Happy Herbivore: Over 175 Quick-and-Easy Fat-Free and Low-Fat Vegan Recipes. Isa Chandra Moskowitz also comes pretty close to Campbell's way of eating in the reduced-fat version of her super-tasty chef's recipes (though she adds very small quantities of oil that you can cut out if you want to stay true to Campbell's way) -- in Appetite for Reduction: 125 Fast and Filling Low-Fat Vegan Recipes.

If you're curious and you want to come to grips with the clash in food science between Campbell's minority viewpoint and mainstream theories, then you've come to the right book. Further, if you'd like to hold your own in discussions with people who may want to know how you can be so confident as you shrug off the mainstream opposition and lean into the radical health promise of whole-foods plant-based eating, read this. If you simply want to know why whole foods, plant-based eating has not become more widely accepted, then Whole is a very fine book for you. Thank you, T. Colin Campbell for turning it out.

Another great book from Dr. Campbell
By Stella Blackson
I loved the China Study. Now this just adds to it, explaining the reductionist thinking that passes for research nowadays. I have been plant-based for many years. unfortunately, it has been tough to convert my family to this way of eating.
I feel so healthy and good on this diet. At my age, (59) my mother started on high blood pressure medication. When I gave blood recently, mine was 108/80.
It is a tough sell for the people I know. This book highlights how hard it is to change age-old thinking. (Especially when there's money involved). The only person in my family who read the China Study, my daughter, eats healthily like I do. The rest of them won't read it. (Heads in the sand?)
Thank you, Dr. Campbell, for another great book.
