Great overview!

I consider myself a beginner and this book really helped me get me up and running on designing web sites. Each section is to the point and doesn't assume too much, which is perfect for me. The chapters about HTML and CSS were invaluable. It could have used a chapter on designing web graphics, so I just use GRSites for that which a lot a people seem to swear by. I found going thru the book for hours, and learning new things in an enjoyable and organized way, the author definitely writes well. Great stuff!

Effective skills builder for web authors

Karl Stolley's "How To Design and Write Web Pages Today" is a good, solid introduction to fundamentals of web page authoring. It's a collection of tools and a downloadable template which, when worked through by anyone with the must fundamental personal computer experience, a good foundation of page authoring skills and items of interest.

There just aren't enough of this kind of book these days - a simple, focused guide teaching one practical computer skill. If you know someone who continually talks about wanting to get into web development someday, this is a basic skills book they should have and work through with the downloadable Rapid Prototyping Kit (a shell of pages and sheets and javascript files) which the author maintains at his website.

HTML 5 may replace some XHTML coding, but the basic principles which a reader of this book will work through will help them engage with HTML 5 or older languages.

For experienced developers: I found it useful for reviewing and updating my site template toolbox. Might work for you too.

CHECK FOR ALL PAGES IN YOUR BOOKS.

This book was listed as NEW when purchased and is missing pages 509-524 and now I can’t return it because I missed the 30 day return. Unfortunately it was not noticed right away because they had not gotten to that part of the book in class until just this week… Can’t study and now have a non-usable damaged book….

Possibly the Perfect Textbook

This book is beyond useful! I'm acing my class, and I plan on holding onto it for graduate school. There is a lot of information included in each chapter, but it isn't overwhelming. Tests for certain organisms are highlighted in their own sections. Somehow the authors managed to include nothing but helpful facts. No pointless fillers. No digging through a 50 page paragraph for one key topic. The organization is flawless.

If your professor is using a different textbook, you should consider purchasing this boo as a supplemental read.

I reviewed every Money and Banking text I could get my hands on before selecting Mishkin's text to use while I was an instructor at one of the top universities in the US. Mishkin's text was hands-down the best text. But there weren't a lot of alternatives to choose from. This text gets used in a lot of MBA programs.
The thing I liked most about this text was its comprehensiveness. Mishkin did a far better job than the other text of introducing stock options. And of course, he covered the banking (money multiplier, bnak loans, etc.) side comprehensively. Good job with exchange rates, too.
Weaknesses: Need more on the insurance industry, particularly with the biggest banks now firmly in that business. Need more on financial futures. And finally, I'd like to see a little more mathematical rigor. I supplemented the text in an undergrad class with some more mathematical articles from the economics literature.

About the MyEconLab attachment to this book

If you're an independent learner; that is, not enrolled as a student in a course at a school, OR IF YOU ARE, BUT THE INSTRUCTOR IS NOT PARTICIPATING (Using the MyEconLab software for course materials), and thus can't provide you with a COURSEID, a warning about the MyEconLab study aid attachment to this textbook; the instructions for registering to use MyEconLab are less than candid.

They just say that without a CourseId you can still access "most of the online resources listed." You are directed to a generic Mishkin web site instead of registering at the main MyEconLab portal.

Being an honest person, I used the alternate registration. I was still asked for the ZIP for my school; I used my own. I then got a list of local schools or "Other" to choose from. I chose other, and entered "Independent Learner".

The registration then completed; the confirmation stated it is only good for SIX MONTHS.

If you go to the main MyEconLab Web portal shown in the user manual after registering as a non-student, your user ID will not be recognized. You have to use a generic portal for the Mishkin textbook instead.

What you get there is:

e-textbook, glossary, FLASH animated graphs, chapter quizzes and Web links from the textbook margins

The Weekly news selection (web links, so may expire; earliest was Aug. 2004)

The "Chapter Readings" in journals, etc. (ditto above)

Since these can expire at their parent web sites, I suggest you take the precaution of printing them out (I use Acrobat to make PDF files or download PDF files if available at the source). Also check out any links in the articles and do the same.

The Readings are probably the best of what you DO get, along with the animations and quizzes. The web links are updated, that's OK if you're not good at figuring that sort of thing out for yourself.

There is also a series of Chapter Appendices, not printed in the book, available with the e-text of the book at the alternate site.

WHAT YOU WON'T GET:

"Foundations Interactive" (whatever that is)

"MathXL for Econ" - the math review tutorial (would be nice)

"Research Navigator"

"eThemes of the Times"

The last two are a REAL Disappointment to me, because the Navigator (see textbook Preface) is supposed (among other things) to provide "a complete YEAR of search for full-text articles from the New York Times" and "Best of Web Link Library of peer-reviewed web sites." The last is described in the Preface as "thematically related articles from the NYTimes accompanied by critical-thinking questions." I was looking forward to these, because the NYTimes charges $$ by the article for archived (non-current) articles, and this can get expensive in a hurry, and an increasing number of other web sites, including industry association journals are now similarly archive and have paid access only.

So without being enrolled in a class that has an instructor who is using the course material software, you won't be able to access some of the BEST of the advertised materials of the MyEconLab add on.

They could have been clearer about WHAT exactly you would have had access to. They also could have said that the non-student registration is only good for 6 months, since the description of the NYTimes access for a full year (which you don't get at all) might reasonably lead one to infer that the registration is valid for a year.

And I fail to see why they couldn't throw in at least the Math review tutorial, since it wouldn't seem to involve any kind of outside contract or royalty such as the NYTimes access might.

Anthropology of Magic or Magical Anthropology?

What kind of thing is magic, exactly? Or better, what makes magic the kind of thing it is, as distinct from, say, religion, science, art, or philosophy? This is the question that A General Theory of Magic aims to answer. Not a theory FOR magic, but a theory OF magic is set out here in this classic of anthropological research. From shape-shifting to spell-binding, incantation to malediction, Marcel Mauss and Henri Hubert scour the arcane terrain of magical practice to draw out its specificity amongst the far-flung field of cultural production.

Setting themselves most distinctly against James Frazer's theory of magic as 'sympathetic action' (in which like causes produce like effects - as in: water magic producing rain, etc), 'A General Theory's' most immediate goal is in fact to show how magic cannot be understood in terms of any one of it's disparate elements; not this or that magical principle defines magic, but rather it's 'totality' as a phenomenon - one including magical actors, beliefs, rituals, objects, traditions and representations, all of which, only when taken together, properly delimit the field of magic.

In a word: magic is a social phenomenon. A strange result! After all, isn't magic instead a furtive practice, one done in candle-lit cravens and in the shadows of society? True, say Mauss and Hubert, but close attention to the actual practice of magic nonetheless reveals it's highly orchestrated and tightly regulated character: spells are formulas, indifferent to meaning ("abracadabra!") while magical objects simply 'play the part' in rites and rituals largely uncaring as to their specificity; in all things magic, it is in fact convention which rules it's operation.

Having established this already important result however, for Mauss and Hubert, the heart of magic lies deeper still - not just any social phenomenon, but one involving the exercise of 'magical causality': a type of causality running in 'parallel', as it were, with the everyday, pedestrian causes we are all familiar with. In turn, this magical causality is premised on a kind of force - familiar with every video game player - here dubbed 'mana'. Now, the ambiguities surrounding the invocation of 'mana' are multiple and well known, but they can be summed up by asking whether all of this is just to say that magic is... well, magical. So the success of 'A General Theory' isn't a given, but as far as starts go, it's a damn fine one.

A classic of Anthropology!

This book, first published in 1902-1903, in co-authorship with H. Hubert, is one of the classics of Anthropology. Marcel Mauss, disciple and nephew of great French sociologist Emile Durkheim, strongly influenced generations of anthropologists, including Claude L�vi-Strauss. The book stablished a new pattern for understanding the magical and religious phenomena. Unfortunaly, the two previous reviewrs seems to have looking for something very different. It is not a how-to-do book, it is for people interested in the Social Sciences.

Crossing the Pond

I first heard of Marcel Mauss while reading Daniel O'Keefe's *Stolen Lightning* and knew I wanted to learn more on Mauss, who is not that well known here in the United States.

Mauss mentions sympathetic magic as being part of many cultures as does O'Keefe. Mauss might have been interested in Jung's concept of synchronicity as a form of sympathetic magic or even the concept of apophenia if he had lived when the word was created in the late 1950s.

This book does not explain how magic works. Those looking for a how-to will be disappointed as another reviewer has pointed out.

Getting Unstuck

"What do I say about my faith in an age of political correctness and hostility?" That question gets a thorough and helpful answer in this book. I believe that most Christians would like to see more of the people that they know "get" the message of good news that is Christ's message and purpose for coming to this world. They just are confused or dismayed by the responses that they have gotten. This little book helps me to be proactive and loving and patient, with the goal clearly in mind. Thanks Mark Mittleberg and Bill Hybels. It is no wonder Willow Creek Church is growing. You have helped your church members become contagious Christians! This wisdom helped me and it will help you too.

It's Good but....

This series has become very well known across Christian circles in the united states (and potentially other countries as well) and it is difficult to not see why. It offers a non-confrontational way to proclaim the gospel with those we know. Yet when I read the gospels and epistles I don't see this strategy ANYWHERE. Now I'm not going to go as far as to say that this method isn't biblical, but there is a major emphasis missing. We as servants of Christ are to be Bold in proclaiming the King and Creator of everything (even time), to the point where we realize our chains are to the procession of Christ and nothing else matters. When the full grandeur of God is in your sight there is nothing else that matter but His glory. Your friends and there possible rejection of you/your beliefs is secondary.

Next is the attempt to provide a formula for telling others about Christ. The bible shows us over and over again that there are no formulas. When the prophets where called they were each different (personality), every time Jesus healed someone it was done differently (method), and the only consistency is the Word and that it was for the Glory of God.

Nowhere in this book do those truths come forward. If the Apostle Paul needed others to pray for his boldness, how much more we need it! This book does provide a good starting point for people, but it must be followed by the truth that God doesn't like formulas. Every person, life, and moment is uniquely written by Him.

God's children need tools (like how to first prepare their testimony and an easy starting point with the gospel) to build confidence, which this series does well. If you do go over this with your small group make sure to place emphasis on the uniqueness of God's plan for everyone, and how to be open and lead by the Spirit. Look into the book of Acts and see how God responded when the Kingdom of God was boldly proclaimed. I would love to see this series completed in a way that encourages people to put God drastically first in their lives.

Excellent Book...and our book club May read

Do you sometimes feel like you don't quite understand the parables on the Kingdom of Heaven? Or like you're missing the full meaning of the Sermon on the Mount? Have you ever wondered how the disciples would have understood Jesus' actions during the Last Supper?

I've read the Gospels numerous times and read many books about what life was like in Biblical times. Frankly, I didn't realize until now how much I was missing by not understanding the rabbinic teaching styles of the time (among other things). Despite all my study, most of this information was new.

This book opened up my understanding of the Gospels by allowing me to see the deeper, richer meaning that would have been understood all along by the Jewish audiences of Jesus' day.

The book consists of general cultural notes alternated with using that new knowledge to examine specific Gospel passages. However, this book isn't just an intellectual exercise--it'll have you digging into your Bible with new enthusiasm and will deepen your walk with God.

While Christians who have a solid foundational knowledge of the Gospels will probably get the most out of this book, I'd highly recommend it to any Christian who wants a deeper understanding of Christ and his teachings.

A GEM of a book...

I want to share with you a new exciting book I read this past week, I have been SMILING everyday since I started reading it. It's a very good book. The book is 272 pages, with lots of great footnote (rare meat for me) in truth ever page of this book is a real GEM. As I finished the last chapter of the book last evening, I had a vision in my mind of a light wooden church pew in front of me, and on the backside were a bible, a hymnal, and one of these books for people to read. If only every Christian would read it was my thought to the Lord. I believe it would help them SEE You in Your true Jewish setting.

I'm praying this book will impact many many people for the Lord, Jews and Gentile alike.

Now, to tell you the truth I knew almost everything in this book about Rabbi Jesus; I have been teaching this kind of stuff for over 19 years

It was a delight to me to see how well Spangler and Lois laid out everything in this book; really it moved me to tears. I think the Christian world at large has been waiting for this book, yes, I know it has...! So anyone who wants to KNOW their HEBREW Lord Yeshua (Jesus), should read this book.
