Procopius: History of the Wars, Vol. 5, Books 7.36-8: Gothic War (Loeb Classical Library, No. 217) (English and Greek Edition), by Procopi

Procopius, born at Caesarea in Palestine late in the 5th century, became a lawyer. In 527 CE he was made legal adviser and secretary of Belisarius, commander against the Persians, and went with Belisarius again in 533 against the Vandals and in 535 against the Ostrogoths. Sometime after 540 he returned to Constantinople. He may have been that Procopius who was prefect of Constantinople in 562, but the date of his death (after 558) is unknown.

Procopius's History of the Wars in 8 books recounts the Persian Wars of emperors Justinus and Justinian down to 550 (2 books); the Vandalic War and after-events in Africa 532–546 (2 books); the Gothic War against the Ostrogoths in Sicily and Italy 536–552 (3 books); and a sketch of events to 554 (1 book). The whole consists largely of military history, with much information about peoples and places as well, and about special events. He was a diligent, careful, judicious narrator of facts and developments and shows good powers of description. He is just to the empire's enemies and boldly criticises emperor Justinian. Other works by Procopius are the Anecdota or Secret History—vehement attacks on Justinian, Theodora, and others; and The Buildings of Justinian (down to 558 CE) including roads and bridges as well as churches, forts, hospitals, and so on in various parts of the empire.

The Loeb Classical Library edition of Procopius is in seven volumes.

The Last Classical Historian
By Arch Stanton
Since there are so many of these darn things the review shall be divided into three sections. First, a brief description of the Loeb series of books and their advantages/disadvantages. Second shall be my thoughts on the author himself, his accuracy, as well as his style and the style of his translator. This is of course only my opinion and should be treated as such. The final part shall review what this particular book actually covers.

The Loeb series date back to the turn of the last century. They are designed for people with at least some knowledge of Greek or Latin. They are a sort of compromise between a straight English translation and an annotated copy of the original text. On the left page is printed the text in Greek or Latin depending on the language of the writer and on the right side is the text in English. For somebody who knows even a little Greek or Latin these texts are invaluable. You can try to read the text in the original language knowing that you can correct yourself by looking on the next page or you can read the text in translation and check the translation with the original for more detail. While some of the translations are excellent mostly they are merely serviceable since they are designed more as an aid to translation rather than a translation in themselves. Most of them follow the Greek or Latin very closely. These books are also very small, maybe just over a quarter the size of your average hardcover book. This means that you'll need to buy more than just one book to read a complete work. They are also somewhat pricey considering their size. The Loeb Collection is very large but most of the more famous works can be found in better (and cheaper) translations elsewhere. If you want to read a rarer book or read one in the original language then you can't do better than the Loeb Editions.

There are 7 volumes of Procopius in the Loeb series which include all his known works. Procopius was the last great Classical historian and a personal favorite of mine. His works were written in the middle of the 6th Century during the reign of Justinian when the Empire was once again on the rise. His books are about the wars to reconquer the Western Empire which had fallen in 476. As an author Procopius is highly readable. His works cover a very interesting period and do so with great skill. He is from the Sallustan school of history writing and divides his work into sections based on similar topics instead of following a strictly chronological approach. This makes his books both easier to follow and more entertaining for the reader. While his books are technically focused on the wars they cover much more than that including politics and economic matters. Procopius is also the author of two other very different books. One a very boring panegyric on the building works of Justinian and the other called the 'Anecdota' or 'Secret History' which is basically a collection of every possible slander he could make against Justinian, his wife Theodora, and just about everybody else he'd ever met. As you might gather from those two different books Procopius suffers on accuracy issues. While he doesn't seem to have told direct lies (except in his secret history) his lies of omission are likely to be serious. Unfortunately he is our main source for that era which makes it hard to check him against other sources. Still, even if he fudges facts a little to obscure some points he is unlikely to have completely changed the events described. The translation is quite good.

This volume contains the end of the books detailing the war to reclaim Italy. I don't know why they split the books into bits.

Makes for Pleasurable Reading and Research
By yongbing1
It is great to see that Procopius is still being made available to all. This version provides the reader with both the Greek and its English translation. Thus, if you read Greek you have Procopius' own words. If you don't read Greek, you have a completely faithful translation. Procopius was secretary to General Belisarius, chronicling the generals battles and other actions of his life. You are getting history first hand when you read or study Procopius. You are not getting some historian's interpretation of events long past.

At the Origins of Modern Atheism, by Michael J. Buckley

In this book, Michael J. Buckley investigates the rise of modern atheism, arguing convincingly that its roots reach back to the seventeenth century, when Catholic theologians began to call upon philosophy and science-rather than any intrinsically religious experience-to defend the existence of god. Buckley discusses in detail thinkers such as Lessius, Mersenne, Descartes, and Newton, who paved the way for the explicit atheism of Diderot and D'Holbach in the eighteenth century. "[A] capaciously learned and brilliantly written book....This is one of the most interesting and closely argued works on theology that i have read in the last decade."-Lawrence S. Cunningham, Theology Today

A Masterly Study
By Amazon Customer
In an age where atheism is generally taken to be the 'default' or 'neutral' position and where the burden of proof is presumed to rest with theism, it is invigorating to read a book that treats atheism as a theory or school with its own intellectual history. Buckley's concern is not to trace atheism to its very origins but rather to explore the way in which early modern thinkers such as Descartes in their attempts to place theism on secure 'scientific' foundations unwittingly gave rise to exactly the opposite position. Buckley's study is a major achievement in the history of ideas.

Brilliant. Mandatory reading!
By Cymbeline
This is probably the most influential book I've read, and I've read quite a few. It is a trenchant bit of historical work, explaining how the question of the existence of God became translated out of theology and ultimately into physics and science. This book will rock any atheist's world.

The Courtroom as a Space of Resistance: Reflections on the Legacy of the Rivonia Trial (Edinburgh/Glasgow Law and Society Series), by Awol

Fifty years before his death in 2013, Nelson Mandela stood before Justice de Wet in Pretoria's Palace of Justice and delivered one of the most spectacular and liberating statements ever made from a dock. In what came to be regarded as "the trial that changed South Africa", Mandela summed up the spirit of the liberation struggle and the moral basis for the post-Apartheid society. In this blistering critique of Apartheid and its perversion of justice, Mandela transforms the law into a sword and shield. He invokes it while undermining it, uses it while subverting it, and claims it while defeating it. Wise and strategic, Mandela skilfully reimagines the courtroom as a site of visibility and hearing, opening up a political space within the legal. This volume returns to the Rivonia courtroom to engage with Mandela's masterful performance of resistance and the dramatic core of that transformative event. Cutting across a wide-range of critical theories and discourses, contributors reflect on the personal, spatial, temporal, performative, and literary dimensions of that constitutive event. By redefining the spaces, institutions and discourses of law, contributors present a fresh perspective that re-sets the margins of what can be thought and said in the courtroom.

has a lot of misc information
By Fractal Cat
i ordered this because it is a favorite book of a friend of mine. apparently, ellen white covers so many topics in it, for instance, how people should interact with each other within a congregation when one of the members is doing something inappropriate. my girlfriend seems to think that ellen white hit the nail on the head and gives very good advice. i ordered the book for myself to use as a reference, and haven't used it yet to have an opinion of my own to share.

Thomas Edison: Inventor of the Age of Electricity (Lerner Biographies), by Linda Tagliaferro

Thomas Edison, one of the world's greatest inventors, complied an unprecedented, 1,093 patents during his eighty-four-year lifetime. Blessed with natural genius, Edison worked up to twenty hours a day, seven days a week. Through hard work and perseverance, he spurred the growth of three industries. He blazed the trail for commercial electric power, transformed the entertainment industry through the creation of motion pictures, and helped create a recorded music industry through his invention of the phonograph.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9-The life of this remarkable inventor and scientific genius is explored in lively and accessible detail. From the beginning, Edison displayed a curious and eager mind. He left home early to work on the trains and later as a telegrapher. His first patented invention was an electric vote recorder, which flopped with politicians, but he later invented the Universal Stock Ticker and sold it for $40,000. With this financial independence, Edison established his own factories and later developed the phonograph, light bulb, and motion-picture camera, creating three new industries. In all, he garnered 1093 patents, a feat that remains unsurpassed. In this clearly written and thoroughly researched volume, the information flows smoothly and logically. The author explains the scientific aspects of Edison's work in simple and concise language. She also examines some negative aspects of the man's personality, including his workaholic nature and neglect of his family. Black-and-white photographs or reproductions appear on almost every page. A winning and highly readable portrait of an esteemed American.

The Case of the Missing Secretary
By A Customer
The back cover reads:
"Kit Morris would simply quit and let financial wizard Logan Deverell see for himself just how far his Midas touch took him...without a secretary! For three years she'd kept his books, losing her head over one singularly stubborn financial figure--Logan himself! If he was too proud to sense the sparks, Kit had a mind to make him sense their absence! How was a respectable busienessman supposed to react when his missing secretary turned out working for a private eye? Sure, Logan was miserable. But he couldn't ask Kit to come back to work when every inch of him wanter her--for play!"

Horrific
By The book lady
Kit got fired from her job as Logan's secretary two weeks ago because of comments she made about his fiance, Betsy. Kit knows that Betsy ruined a man, taking him for all he was worth and doesn't want that to happen to Logan, the fact she's in love with him doesn't make her any more objective about the whole situation. Now Logan realizes how good he had it with Kit and wants her back, but she wants no part of it, and so begins a tale of malevolent children, wedding hungry men, sex obsessed bosses and white wedding virgins.

I honestly can't begin to describe just how truly awful this book it. The plot is utterly ridiculous, the worst being Logan's young cousin's who kidnap, assault and vandalize the property of anyone brave enough to come on their property, while their father asks every woman he meets to marry him, to get someone to raise the children (read demons), he ignores. Then there's Logan, a MASSIVE jerk who doesn't think there is anything wrong with sleeping with Kit while engaged to Betsy because he's only marrying Betsy because she won't put out anyway. Once he finds out Kit loves him he uses her feelings to try to get her to sleep with him even thought she is a never been touched virgin, and he doesn't even have a twinge of continuous about having an affair with her when he's committed to someone else because it wouldn't be some cheap one night stand because he needs more time than that before he was ready to move on, Kit's feelings be damned. Not to mention he kept an apartment just to screw women in and that was the only place he ever took Kit, yeah, real classy. And finally there's Kit who is just about every spunky virgin heroine clich combined into one annoying character.

I am not what you would call a Diana Palmer fan but I have read a book or two by her before and they were fine, I didn't love them but I sure didn't hate them. This was a joke. The heroine is treated like crap by Logan, despite all their blow out fights, all he has to do is snap his fingers and she comes running to him.

I can't even begin to describe how horrible this is. Maybe as some kind of spoof of a secretary/boss romance this would work but this is supposed to be serious. I'm sorry but I just hated it.

1 star.

Awful!
By Bea Schreiber
I had to keep checking the front page to make sure this terrible book was by one of my favorite authors, Diana Palmer. Every character in this novel was one-dimensional, and the book was so dialogue heavy. It never SHOWED me what the characters were feeling, but only what they were saying. I love Diana Palmer but this book was such a dissapointment. I wanted to love it, but I did not care about whether the characters got together or whether they lived or died. This was one of the worst books I've ever read. The only reason I finished it was to be fair to one of my favorite authors. Pass on this one; it's a waste of time. Try Palmer's Lacy.

Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans, by A. J. Baime

By the early 1960s, the Ford Motor Company, built to bring automobile transportation to the masses, was falling behind. Young Henry Ford Ii, who had taken the reins of his grandfather’s company with little business experience to speak of, knew he had to do something to shake things up. Baby boomers were taking to the road in droves, looking for speed not safety, style not comfort. Meanwhile, Enzo Ferrari, whose cars epitomized style, lorded it over the European racing scene. He crafted beautiful sports cars, "science fiction on wheels," but was also called "the Assassin" because so many drivers perished while racing them.

Go Like Hell tells the remarkable story of how Henry Ford Ii, with the help of a young visionary named Lee Iacocca and a former racing champion turned engineer, Carroll Shelby, concocted a scheme to reinvent the Ford company. They would enter the high-stakes world of European car racing, where an adventurous few threw safety and sanity to the wind. They would design, build, and race a car that could beat Ferrari at his own game at the most prestigious and brutal race in the world, something no American car had ever done.

Go Like Hell transports readers to a risk-filled, glorious time in this brilliant portrait of a rivalry between two industrialists, the cars they built, and the "pilots" who would drive them to victory, or doom.

A Q&A with Go Like Hell author A.J. Baime

Question: What are you saying in your book that hasn't been said before?

Answer: No one has ever successfully written a book about cars and racing that can be easily enjoyed by someone who doesn't know a thing about cars and racing. My book accomplishes this. At the same time, reviewers who have studied this automotive era for decades have read the book and told me they were shocked to learn many things they didn't know. Specifically, no one has ever written about this story with such a focus on the business side: why it happened in the first place, how Henry Ford II had a vision to create the first pan-European auto company in the 1960s, selling Ford cars from London to the border of Russia. How could he prove that his American cars were the best in the world and that Europeans should buy them? By winning Le Mans. There's a whole foundation to this story that I've never seen fully explored elsewhere.

Q: How did you do your research?

A: For starters, I did dozens of interviews: Carroll Shelby, Lee Iacocca, Phil Hill, Mario Andretti, A. J. Foyt, Dan Gurney, John Surtees, Edsel Ford II (son of Henry Ford II), Piero Ferrari (son of Enzo Ferrari), Lloyd Ruby, plus engineers, mechanics, PR men, executives, and on and on. I conducted interviews in Italy, France, England, Los Angeles, and Florida, plus countless others over the phone from my office in New York. On top of the interviews, I read everything ever written on the subject, and I saw every bit of footage, which was a particularly good source for dialogue. In some cases, I took fast cars onto racetracks, such as Daytona and Ford's Romeo test facility north of Detroit, to try to get further into the heads of the drivers during scenes that take place at these locales.

Q: Any highlights during your research?

A: My interview with Carroll Shelby. Afterward, he drove me from his office in Gardena, California, to the Long Beach airport. The guy was getting on in years, and his vision was fading. But we were passing car after car on I-405 in a Mustang GT-H, which has ridiculous amounts of horsepower. We're talking about a guy who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans wearing chicken farmer overalls in 1959. Nearly fifty years later, he can't see much, but he can still drive.

Q: Why is this topical now?

A: What's happening in the American auto industry today is just stunning. My book is in large part about Detroit at the dawn of globalism. It's kind of like the first chapter in a long narrative that is now reaching its climax. In the 1960s, when the global car sales race began, Detroit was battling against German, British, and Japanese companies for the first time. Ford sold cars by proving on the racetrack they were better than anyone else's. We won in heroic fashion in the 1960s. We’re not winning anymore

From Publishers Weekly
In the 1950s and '60s, the 24 hours of Le Mans in France were not just a race but, according to Playboy editor Baime, œthe most magnificent marketing tool the sports car industry had ever known. It was also incredibly dangerous, the site of the biggest tragedy in racing history—Pierre Levegh's Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR slamming into an embankment and leaving at least 75 dead in 1955. Baime's narrative culminates in the 1966 Le Mans race—where Ford cars placed first, second and third—and the fierce competition between Ford and Ferrari. Ford head Henry Ford II realized that in order to compete in the world market, his cars had to win races—and he could accomplish both by winning at Le Mans. Blocking him was the œagitator of men, Enzo Ferrari, who devoted his life to building the perfect champion automobile and who prevented Ford from buying Ferrari in 1963. Both men's quest for victory trickles down to their workers. Henry II spent millions on technology and manpower to build the perfect car, the GT40, while displaying limited patience after years of failure. Meanwhile in Italy, Ferrari's world-class drivers faced their own difficulties pleasing their calculating, results-driven boss. Baime's skillful reporting and introspective writing style make for an insightful portrait of two automobile legends, as well as an exciting account of a bygone era in racing and in American culture. 8-page color insert. Review
"All I can say is: Wow! Go Like Hell drops you right smack in the middle an intense and ferocious battle between Ford and Ferrari in the 1960s. Baime's exceptional voice puts the reader into minds of the drivers, designers, and executives who formed the Golden Age of racing; his fantastic descriptions allow the reader to feel the pounding of the cylinders. If you like cars—nay, if you have ever seen a car—you must read this book!"
—Garth Stein, New York Times bestselling author of The Art of Racing in the Rain "Light up a Lucky Strike. Pour yourself a good stiff drink. Go Like Hell is a wonder, chock-a-block with great heroes and villains, a pedal-to-the metal account of greed and gumption, a chronicle of obsession and vain glory. Don't worry about that seat belt. Just go for the ride."

"Like the cars it describes, Go Like Hell is a streamlined marvel built for speed, fueled by testosterone and likely to elicit happy grins from anyone who has ever heard music in the squeal of a tire or the roar of an engine . . . [Baime] hits the gas, pops the clutch and takes readers on a red-blooded ride to glory that will have them smiling all the way to the checkered flag."  —Dallas Morning News

This is an ideal book for gear-heads, automotive enthusiasts, historians and people who might find amazing symmetry in what happened over 40 years ago verses what is happening today." -- Denver Examiner  "Engaging... Grips you from the early pages to the conclusion." -- Autoweek

Exceptional Exploration of the Competition between Ford and Ferrari to Win Le Mans
By Wesley Bob
A.J. Baime has written a fascinating and involving book about European race car life in the 1960's, some might offer the Golden Age of the sport, driven by the competition between Ford and Ferrari. AJB is a very solid writer and his prose is compelling and his research deep. In particular he delves into the two personalities that drove (no pun intended) the competition: Henry Ford the second, grandson of The Henry Ford and Ferrari himself, the creator of the most dynamic of European sports cars then and now. The story is more than just theirs, it is heavily shaped by many others ranging from the steel-nerved drivers of the day to the cadre of engineers and builders of the cars. Some of the characters are well fleshed out and re-occur throughout the story, such as Carrol Shelby. There are a few times when the mob of car designers, builders and racing stalwarts can get a little confusing. In addition there were some of the races that AJB glossed over. A few of the races in which he dug into were some of the more exciting passages of the book. I certainly understand why he didn't want to write hundreds of pages regurgitating car positions etc. but a few of the races he didn't explore other than share the results. It seemed the book was just a little lighter in this area than it should have been. With that flaw aside, it is a well written book and brings to life a time of sport and dynamic competition that I found fascinating. My guess is that you will find it invigorating as well.

Worth a buy
By Michigoon
Go Like Hell isn't quite what I was expecting, but it is certainly worth owning if you're any kind of gearhead.

Pros:
-Does a great job telling the overall story surrounding Ford's winning years at LeMans, particularly 1965 and the big win in '66. The writer is advertised on the jacket as being associated with Playboy, and that's the sort of writing you should expect.
-Lost of human interest stories. The book focuses mainly on the people involved, and their businesses, rather than getting overly deep into mechanical aspects. You'll learn a lot about the people involved, from Ford executives, to drivers, to Mr. Ferrari himself.
-Lots of very well-sourced quotes and factoids from a massive list of interviews. The book contains a bibliography and index which sum to a larger size than most chapters in the book. The level of research is really quite astonishing, and that's lovely to see for such an important historical work.

Cons:
-Lack of mechanical detail. Considering the Ford GT40mk.II will be considered by any gearhead to be the "real" hero of this story, you'd expect quite a bit more detail into its interior workings and development. While you do get a good general overview of the parts involved- particularly the massive engine- this isn't near the technical manual I would have liked it to be. A good example is that the book goes into the Ford "J-Car" program, which implemented a variety of experimental mechanical designs- none of which are even mentioned when discussing the car. I'll avoid spoilers, but anyone familiar with the story will know there are critical reasons why the new parts on the J-Car must be mentioned in any discussion of its history.
-Feels a bit "broad" for a car book. Related to the point about the mechanical detail, the overall tone of the book seems to focus mostly on the people and the broad forces involved. Again, this is perfectly in line for a writer of Playboy, or perhaps think Salon. There's sufficient detail to get your car passion going, but you're probably going to want to get on Wikipedia for some of the finer details to really quench your thirst.

Any true fan is going to wish this book came with a Popular Mechanics style cutaway blueprint of the Mk.II, and the fact that it doesn't have that level of mechanical detail is my only gripe. The human interest stories are top-notch. You'll climb inside the heads of Ferrari, Ford II, Iacocca, Shelby, and a host of drivers- and there's a long list of sources for further reading. Definitely pick this one up.

Why aren't there ten stars?
By Philip W. May
For people addicted to the car disease this is one super book. I thought I was pretty tuned in back when Hank Deuce decided to go for Ferrari's jugular. But this book revealed all kinds of stuff I missed-- big and little. Big stuff, like the fact that Enzo Ferrari had an illegitimate son. Little stuff like Bruce McClaren having one leg shorter than the other. Also a detailed description of Carroll Shelby's Cobra and Mustang GT350 operation at Los Angeles airport. And a lot of new info on Ken Miles-- one of my heroes because of his MG Specials. And so much more. I worked for an ad agency on Wilshire Blvd. in L.A. in the mid-'60s and would drive my MG TC home to Redondo Beach on Pacific Coast Highway every night for two reasons: 1. To hear the car's neat exhaust sound in the tunnel under LAX's runway. 2. To drive past the parking lot for Shelby's operation to see row after row of finished Cobras and GT350s. And I would covet them! Big time! Please don't tell God. Weekends were spent at Riverside, Goleta, Laguna Seca and other tracks watching names in this book race. I didn't give Mr. Baime's book Arsenal of Democracy" a very good review because, unlike this Ford/Ferrari book, I didn't really learn anything new. Maybe that's because I've read a lot about Ford in the last 60 years. But Go Like Hell is really one helluva book so go like hell to order it.

Victorian Murderesses: A True History of Thirteen Respectable French and English Women Accused of Unspeakable Crimes (Dover Books on Histor

This riveting combination of true crime and social history examines a dozen cases from the 1800s involving thirteen French and English women charged with murder. Each incident was a cause clbre, and this mixture of scandal and scholarship offers illuminating details of backgrounds, deeds, and trials.
"The real delight is that historian Mary S. Hartman does more than reconstruct twelve famous trials. She has written a piece on the social history of nineteenth-century women from an illuminating perspective: their favorite murders." — Time Magazine
"Noteworthy …. It has several distinctions: its expert prose style, its scholarly authority, and its perceptive analysis of the prevailing attitudes toward women's roles and domestic relations."—Criticism
"The author would have made a fine detective …. When she observes the women and men in extreme circumstances, she writes with the gift of a novelist and the depth of a scholar." — Los Angeles Times
"Vividly written, meticulously researched." — Choice
"Loved this book and so glad to see it's been returned to print! You can't beat the highly readable scholarly treatment of these 13 Victorian murderesses. Harman does a spectacular job of bringing these women and the carnage they created into the 20th and 21st centuries as well as giving the reader an excellent feminist critique of their reception in scholarly and popular culture. Pour yourself a cup of tea and enjoy the variety of their crimes and their drive to define themselves outside the constrictions of Victorian life." — Under the Covers and Reading

An amazing book...
By Holly
I picked up this book in a used book store because I had heard of one of the "murderesses", a woman called Constance Kent, from a film "Dead of Night." That's why I started the book...
Little did I know that the book would be one of the most amazing things I've ever read! Highly detailed, immensely educational, and fascinating to read. Ms Hartman must've used a time machine to travel back to this period of history... I felt like I was there. I felt like I got to know not only the women the book profiles, but also the clothes, the homes, the legal system, the newspapers, everything! Ms Hartman made things that happened long ago seem very current and pertinent to today.
To meet these women, some of them horrible, some of them just striving to get by in a very difficult world, was life changing for me. I honestly don't think I've ever read a book that affected me so.
Read this book. Read this book! Women will marvel at how far we've come. Men will find it interesting, too, to see how different and difficult life was for both sexes 'back then.'
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Many thanks, Ms Hartman, for your hard work and dedication.

Not only a true crime book
By A Customer
I bought this book years ago and still reread it. Ms. Hartman has not only told the fascinating stories of these ladies. She has given us a glimpse into the Victorian world in England and France. Her research into women's roles is amazing. There are details of marriage, daily life, and how women coped with their restrictions. If the Victorian way of life interests you, this will be a book you will enjoy over and over.

Beware of woman scorned
By Fuzzy's Mom
Victorian times were fraught with change. In both England and France, to a lesser degree, society shifted dramatically. The expectations of the middle class and the subsequent transitions to more modern times perhaps impacted women more than men. While still bound by the double standard in society and morality, still with less rights than their husbands, more and more women shed the old standards and adopted new expectations.
Ms. Hartman has done an excellent job retelling 13 tales of murder committed by wives during this era. One will get the full picture of what led up to the murders and what happened in the justice system. As she points out, there were clearly some who literally got away with murder and others who were convicted but whose guilt is now suspect.
Almost as much as the crimes themselves, the outcomes were determined partly by the way the justice system(the men) perceived the women and their actions. It was an interesting note that of all the women convicted of murder during this time, very few were of the middle and upper middle class. If you were poor the Scales of Justice were more likely to tip against you.
The social history that interweaves in the stories is compelling. While in many cases, the women were "wronged", how they chose to deal with it had much to do with the prevailing sentiments of the time. We learn how crimes of passion involving acid were quite popular for a while and that it was considered less of a crime if the victim was the other woman rather than the spouse.
It is also interesting how the larger family dynamic, the parents of the women, became a less factor in England than in France because of the ways the societies evolved. The role of employees also evolved as society lessened the "bondage" of loyalty that had silenced those serving the families involved. But do not expect this to be a ponderous social history. The author has been able to retain the historical integrity of her work with spinning a good yarn.
Whether you believe the ladies were treated justly or unjustly, almost all tell a cautionary tale: beware a woman scorned.

The ultimate teacher - the lonely friend
By pieter odendaal
This must be the most comprehensive, complete and correct work available. The layout is very neat and systematic with exceptional line drawings. However, the colour photo plates are located at the back of the book and make for unnecessary paging throught this thick book. It also lacks adequate photos and colour drawings of many species. Apart from this it is a monumental work and a solid base for any reference work. The common names are the most correct I have come across and the aditional detail makes for good reading. The printing quality is very good and the hard cover essential. If you consider yourself a serious fish watcher or itchtyologist and you haven't got this book ... think again ! Enjoy !
