About the Author

David Lowe is Professor of History at the Alfred Deakin Research Institute, Deakin University. His research interests include the end of empires in Asia and the uses of history by politicians. He is the author/editor of seven books, including Australian Between Empires (2010) and Menzies and the Great World Struggle (1999).

Tony Joel is Lecturer in History at Deakin University. A former German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) scholarship holder, his research interests include war memory and commemoration. Publications include The Dresden Firebombing: Memory and the Politics of commemorating Destruction (2013).

Great for small group ministries

I am a Pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America out in the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Bailey came to present this book to our congregation in November. His passion for Jesus' teaching in the Sermon on the Mount and it's ability to bring about justice to the disenfranchised was evident. Jim said we need to act out the Sermon on the Mount in our communities. It will transform you and your congregations. It was the foundation for many justice movements throughout history. We are now using it as a Bible Study resource in our home fellowship groups. The scholarship and exegesis are excellent and accessible to the lay person. Jim uses a transforming bible study method complete with pre-packaged questions and exercises for small groups that get us to use our left and right brain. I also use it as a preaching resource.

Writing History in New Directions

_History and Strategy_ is a rare work for a historian. This is because Marc Trachtenberg takes into account major arguments from the political science field of international relations. He addresses questions like crisis stability, nuclear massive retaliation, and the effect of offensive doctrines on the outbreak of war. He does so in several somewhat distinct chapters, including ones on the outbreak of the First World War, American nuclear strategy, the Berlin Crisis, and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Although hardly a revisionist work, Trachtenberg challenges certain popular arguments and addresses certain important questions in the international relations literature. For example, he shows that offensive doctrines cannot be considered the primary factor behind the outbreak of the First World War. As another example, he explains why Eisenhower never used America's great nuclear superiority against the USSR in the 1950s.
_History and Strategy_ is a very strong work that demonstrates how historical analysis can be used very effectively in the field of international relations. By doing so, he gives history greater purpose while providing the historical substance so often lacking in international relations texts.

About the Author
CHARLES H. CORWIN, educated at San Jose State University, has been perfecting his approach to teaching students chemistry for the past two decades. Through special National Science Foundation funding, he studied creative learning systems early in his career, focusing specifically on the introductory chemistry course. It is from these early seeds that Introductory Chemistry: Concepts & Connections has grown. At present, his active areas of research are web-based chemical education, conceptual and algorithmic learning models, and collaborative learning and group work.

Currently, Charles Corwin is a professor of chemistry at American River College, where he was recognized with a teacher of the year award for innovative teaching in 1994. He was also the recipient of an alumni teaching award from Purdue University in 1998.

The book was in new condition but one of the most important pages was gone, the one with the periodic table of elements, half of the table was cut out.

About the Author
Don Knowles has been writing automotive training materials for over 28 years, with 54 textbooks to his credit, as well as student manuals, training CDs, and short articles for service bulletins. He was previously employed as an automotive instructor at the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) Palliser Campus, where he produced over 60 automotive training videos and wrote a computer-assisted instruction (CAI) program to coordinate with each video. Mr. Knowles is currently the owner and manager of Knowles Automotive Training, a company focused exclusively on the preparation of automotive training materials and an educational member of the Automotive Service Association (ASA). An ASE certified Automotive Technician, he has also been a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers for over 30 years, and is a member of the North American Council of Automotive Teachers (NACAT).

Many errors

There are many grammatical errors in this book, with some affecting the answers to the pre, post, or task questions. Many times the "Hint" has no relevant information to the questions being asked, making the "Hint" completely useless. Sometimes, the "Hint" will be exactly the same for 3 different tasks. There are also errors in the answer key. It also seems that questions were randomly put in where they don't necessarily belong. Finally, if you answer a question based the the exact words that are in the text, you may choose the wrong answer. The answer key will tell you that an answer is wrong but the same answer is correct within the "Hint." This book definitely needed another proof read before publishing. Also, some key air brake system test criteria differ in this book and "Heavy Duty Truck Systems" by Sean Bennett (read my review). With all this said, I have been using this book and Sean Bennett's book to study and have passed 4 out of 4 ASE certification tests for Fall 2011.

Excellent Study Guide !!!!!

Excellent guide to prepare yourself for the ASE H.D. Truck Certification Tests. Provides explanations as to why an answer is correct or not correct. Additionally, provides a synopsis for each section of questions as to the theory behind the system the questions are based on, e.g., a brief explanation of Ohms Law if the questions in the section are about voltage, current and resistance. If you have read and understood textbooks of truck systems and engines, this is the study guide you want to use in preparing for the ASE tests.

If you have not worked in the Diesel repair field within the last 5 years, you will not grasp a lot of this information. This book is a refresher for working technicians in the field.

Great Book!!

I am not sure what some of the other reader's issue are with this book being a reprint (and who cares), I think this book had just the right amount of suspense and romance. I really liked the fact that you got to know all of the characters in this book and their history. This book takes you in the beginning when the characters are all young teenagers, which sets the major plot for the story. The second half of the book is sixteen or seventeen years later and shows you what has become of the characters and how dramatically their lives have been effected by the unsolved murders . I really liked the twist this book had in the end, and I found myself speed reading to get to the end just so I could find out who the culprit was. I highly recommend this book!

So long and cliche; don't bother!

Don't bother reading this and for the love of all that is holy, don't pay for it! It dragged on and on. It was a punishment to get through the whole thing. The characters are annoying and stupid. I didn't care about a single one of them. There's no explanation for most of their actions and thoughts, which almost didn't matter because you just know what is going to happen next. I'm sure the author thought she had wonderful plot twists and unexpected events but she most definitely did not. It is so predictable. Each little "shocker" can be seen chapters ahead of the final supposedly shocking revelation. Since I was listening to the audio version, I had no idea when it would end, and each chapter was painful. I was actually groaning out loud at this terrible book, saying "Of course!" repeatedly and being continually annoyed at everyone's stupidity.

The writing itself is skilled, but the story line is ridiculous. It really is like Lisa Jackson wanted to add tons of excitement to a romance story. There is no "final scream" and by the end of the thing, I was hoping they would ALL just die in a fire. The only character I even liked was the sheriff. Why didn't she at least TRY to make her main characters likeable? She did a good job of creating revolting characters, but failed to make anyone else interesting, believable, or likeable. And how many times can one character throw up?? PLEASE.

Upon learning this is a reprint, I wonder how much of the disgusting, depraved behaviors were added in for the reprint to make the book more shocking. Bottom line, the romance story line is stupid and unbelievable, the mystery is not mysterious at all, but the depravity is actually depraved.

A good read!

At 16, Cassidy Buchanan fell hard for her father's new ranch hand, Brig McKenzie, who had been hired to break Cassidy's new colt. The 19-year-old bad boy had had his share of trouble with both the law and women. Cassidy's older sister Angie had eyes for him as well but for different reasons. Then a mysterious deadly fire at the Buchanan sawmill was blamed on Brig and he had to run.

Jackson has a great ear for dialogue and is adept at creating characters that come to life and stay with you long after the book is finished. Even her secondary characters are rich and full. There were many possible suspects and I wasn't certain who was guilty until just before Jackson made the revelation. She delved into all the emotions that an extremely dysfunctional family can experience. This book, at a hefty 530 pages, was probably 200 pages longer than it needed to be. Perhaps I would have been happier with the original.

Great Patterns Book

This is a pretty sharp book. I bought it for 3 reasons. The first was I liked the author's other book Professional Enterprise .NET (Wrox Programmer to Programmer). The second was I wanted to read something about ASP.NET MVC since I don't use it at work. Third, I like to read all new pattern books because it is the only way I can keep them fresh in my mind.

This book is written extremely well. It starts with an introduction to the S.O.L.I.D. design principles and an introduction to design patterns. It then covers every layer of a common enterprise level ASP.NET application and shows the use of patterns in each layer (Business, Service, Data Access, Presentation, and User Experience). The book covers a ton of patterns including both GOF design patterns and Fowler's Enterprise Application Design patterns.

Design patterns covered include Factory, Decorator, Command, Chain of Responsibility, Template, State, Strategy, Composite, and Facade. Messaging patterns such as Document Message, Request-Response, Reservation, and the Idempotent pattern are covered. Enterprise patterns include Lazy Loading, Identity Map, Unit of Work, and the Query Object. User interface patterns include Model-View-Controller, PageController, Model-View-Presenter, and Front Controller.

The third part of the book includes a case study that builds out an E-Commerce store from soup to nuts. They start with requirements and end with a final product you can download from Codeplex.

The downloadable code is very well organized and usable. As mentioned above the authors have also posted a separate download called ASP.NET MVC 2 Case Study Starter Kit on Codeplex which includes the case study sample project covered in the third part of the book.

One of the things I really like about the book is that it includes the use of tools like AutoMapper, NHibernate, StructureMap, Entity Framework, and Castle MonoRail. It also includes patterns using JQuery and Json.

All in all this book accomplished what I had hoped it would. It is a great book on patterns that every programmer should read. It is a must have for any serious developer.

The best software book I have read yet

I am a young professional software engineer, and I have been reading a lot of various software books lately. Coming out of college with a Computer Science degree, I really had no idea how poorly I really understood OO concepts and most of the code I was producing was very procedural in nature. Once I discovered patterns via the Gang of Four book "Design Patterns", I decided it was time to learn some real techniques. Since I was working in an ASP.Net environment, I read some reviews of this book and gave it a shot.

I can easily say this is the best book I have read for software engineering yet because I have been able to incorporate so much of what the book offers. This book really has a lot of great patterns that are exactly what I needed to make my development environment more robust. Correctly learning and implementing the multitude of patterns (at each level of the architecture) and learning about various architectural designs has already paid dividends for my systems' stability, testability, and performance.

One of the things I like best about this book is that all of the examples are explained very clearly, in great detail. All of the code is downloadable from the WROX site, so I was able to take a hands-on approach to learning the topic. There were a few third-party tools to download (an IoC container, NHibernate, and a mapping tool come to mind), but overall there wasn't much needed other than Visual Studio to start working (of course, all of the necessary dlls were included in the projects from the WROX site, so just using those you wouldn't need to download the third-party tools). I've found that one of the biggest challenges with other books is just getting the environment configured and that wasn't an issue here.

It was also good that the author used a multitude of different technologies in the examples. For example, in discussing the implementation of the Repository pattern, ADO.Net, Entities Framework, and NHibernate are all shown as options throughout the book. In discussing the presentation layer, MVP, MVC, and a couple other patterns are discussed, with MVC showing off .Net 4.0's MVC.

I would highly recommend this to any professional looking to learn enterprise patterns. Even if you've read the GoF book "Design Patterns", this is excellent because it covers many new patterns that have arisen in the nearly 20 years since that book was first published.

Code Downloads

If you downloaded the code for the book, there are a few things of which you should be aware. Most of the code was created in VS2008 SP1 (with Framework 3.5) though some later chapters also use VS2010. In addition you need to assure MVC 1.0 is setup for VS2008 in order to run some of the "VS2008" solutions. I had no problems with VS2010 for any of the solutions targeting it. In addition, if there is a "user interface" project in a solution, assure it is the startup project before you run the example. One of the earlier chapters had an incorrect name for one of methods run when the "withdrawal" button is clicked. To correct, go to the code behind select the "Withdraw" method and add "al" to the name of the method.

One of the earlier projects had trouble finding the data base filename because a full path was specified for it instead of using the "|Data Directory|" prefix to the mdf file under the App_Data subdirectory. There were at least four places in the solution where the full path was used. You also need to have a local instance of SQLEXPRESS installed and running. I used SQL Server 2008 R2 SQLEXPRESS.

For the solutions with unit tests, I installed the latest version of NUnit and set it to run within VS2008 using the External Tools option. If done successfully, "NUnit" should show up under the Tools menu. Click "NUnit" and open the test project assembly you want to run the tests for.

Ms. Gregory is Back!

I have been anxiously awaiting the new Philippa Gregory book THE WHITE QUEEN. Like many, I enjoyed THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL; however, I didn't exactly love the last book that I read by Ms. Gregory. I was sincerely hoping that THE WHITE QUEEN would love up to all its advance billing. After reading it (or you could say devouring it), I am so excited to say that Ms. Gregory is back. I loved THE WHITE QUEEN!

THE WHITE QUEEN is the first book in The Cousins' War Series. You can't see me, but I'm doing a little happy dance because that means there will be two more books about the Plantagenets -- THE RED QUEEN and THE WHITE PRINCESS. I am already excited about the release of the next book because I felt as if I was kind of left hanging at the end of THE WHITE QUEEN. I don't mean that in a negative way and I'm sure it was the author's intent, but I want to know what happens next!

While I definitely enjoy historical fiction, I am sadly lacking in knowledge about England and its Monarchy. As a result, I knew almost nothing about the Plantagenets except for a few small things that appeared as side stories in other novels. I can't tell you how much of this story is fact versus fiction; and frankly, I don't even care. I was fascinated by the story Ms. Gregory told about these characters' lives. THE WHITE QUEEN is better than any televised drama or movie I've ever seen. These characters are smart, determined, and ruthless; and I just loved reading about them.

I thought THE WHITE QUEEN had a little bit of everything; and I'm sure there is something in Elizabeth Woodville' s story that will capture your attention. First, THE WHITE QUEEN is just a fabulous historical story about the Cousins' War. There are so many scenes where brother is pitted against brother for control; and the characters involved have absolutely no idea who they can and can not trust. It was a great, suspenseful ride for the reader too! I also thoroughly enjoyed how Ms. Gregory used facts to tell the story while also embellishing the mysteries and holes in the characters' lives to make a very readable story. I realize that Ms. Gregory picked some fascinating people to write about, but a whole lot of credit goes to her for being such an amazing storyteller.

Another part of this story that will keep many readers entertained is the magical and sorcery elements. Elizabeth is said to be the descendant of a mythical water creature called Melusina. Ms. Gregory incorporated the myth of Melusina into the novel and actually used it as a recurring theme/symbol throughout the story. In addition, Elizabeth's mother practiced some examples witchcraft. Some people actually claimed that Elizabeth's mother put a spell on Edward to make him fall in love with her daughter. The character of Elizabeth also had premonitions about certain things and places in her life. She always had a bad feeling that something awful would occur in the Black Tower.

One of my favorite elements of the THE WHITE QUEEN was the love story angle. It seemed to me as if there was a perfect blend of romance and history in this book. Not only did THE WHITE QUEEN show the love affair between Elizabeth and Edward, but this book is also demonstrated the love between mothers and their children. More than once, I was amazed by what women did to protect their children especially in the case of Elizabeth and her sons.

THE WHITE QUEEN would make an excellent book club pick. In fact, if your group enjoys historical fiction like mine does, then you should definitely consider this book in the very near future. One added bonus is that the book is around 400 pages (shorter than many historical novels), and it is not at all overwhelming in scope. There is a great reading guide with fifteen questions that really allow you to delve into Elizabeth's life and her actions. Some of the topics for discussion include mother/daughter relationships, moral dilemmas, adultery, betrayal, and witchcraft. There is also a very interesting interview with Ms. Gregory that gives you some insight into the background of this novel.

The White Queen opens in 1464, on the day that Elizabeth Woodville meets Edward IV, the man who has just recently been crowned King of England. In the attempt to gain back the lands she lost when her husband died, Elizabeth catches the eye of the young king, and becomes Queen of England herself--and eventually, the mother of kings and queens of England.

I have mixed feelings about this book.

Here's what I didn't like so much:
--The fact that the book is written in the present tense. Gregory started writing this way sometime around The Boleyn Inheritance, and it gets on my nerves sometimes because I feel that using the present tense for historical fiction is so limiting.
--The water imagery got to be a bit much-too-much at times. It was beautiful at first, but the fact that Elizabeth kept talking about her ancestress, the water goddess/nymph Melusina, began to get tired after a while.
--Although Gregory is great in general at describing the events of the time periods of which she writes, she's not so good as describing how people actually lived--as with her previous novels, there's very little about what her characters wear, eat, or do in their free time. It's the little bits and pieces that make characters come to life, make them three-dimensional.
--Reading Sharon Kay Penman has seemingly made me pro-Richard III for life, so I was a little disappointed by Gregory's vilification of him in the book (though of course, when the story is told from the point of view of Elizabeth Woodville, of course Richard would be portrayed in a negative light).
--About halfway through the book, Gregory switches from 1st person POV to 3rd, in order to talk about some of the decisive battles of the Wars. I can understand her intent, but it was jarring to me to go back and forth.

However, I think The White Queen is a vast improvement over Gregory's previous book, The Other Queen. Elizabeth is much more of a three-dimensional character, as are the other people that populate the novel. I was also a lot more engaged by the story--mostly because the story of the War of the Roses is more interesting than that of Mary, Queen of Scot's captivity! Elizabeth generally has a bad rep, but here she comes across as a sympathetic woman, strong and courageous at a time when the times moved against her. Gregory uses her imagination a lot more in this novel, because there's so much less documentation to work from. I think it's a good thing that Gregory has moved away from writing about the Tudors (at least for the time being); the Plantagenets are a breath of breath air on Gregory's writing, which was in the process of getting stale.

I Wanted So Much to Like This

I enjoyed the Tudor series. However, it did seem that each book following "The Other Boleyn Girl" was progressively worse, ending with the travesty that was "The Other Queen." I so wanted to like this book.

First off - it is very confusing. I know a lot of English history, but was constantly confused. If you knew nothing about English history, I think you'd be totally flummoxed. The map and family tree at the front of the book were not helpful at all.

Second, the writing was AWFUL. I've read some of the stories my 13 year old writes and she is a Pulitzer Prize winning author compared to most of the conversations between the characters in this book. The dialog is repetitious to the point of beyond nauseating. It goes a little something like this, and I am NOT exagerrating:

"Darling, is your meat exceptionaly chewy?" I paused and chewed my meat for a moment. "Yes, dear," I replied, "the meat is very chewy. Very chewy indeed. In fact, I agree that it is exceptionally chewy." Edward looked at me for a moment while chewing and chewing his meat. "Darling, I think that I have never encountered anything like the chewiness of this chewy meat since that particularly chewy rack of lamb I had back in 1465." I returned Edward's amourous look while I continued to chew and chew and chew my particularly and extraordinarily chewy meat. "Yes, dear, that chewy rack of lamb back in 1465 was exceptionally chewy. In fact, that was a very strong year for exceptionally chewy meat. But this is nowhere near as chewy as the chewiful chewiness of the particularly chewy brisket we had a Blackfriars in 1469." "Really?" Edward paused while working and chewing a particularly chewy piece of meat in his mouth. "Well, you may have a point, but the chewiness of this chewy meat is so chewy that I don't think I can chew it any more."

If they really talked like that back in the 1400s, no wonder that they all wanted to kill each other. Remove all of the repetitive words and sentences from this book and it would be 60-70 pages shorter. Who do you blame - the writer that writes something like this or the editor who fails to fix it?

Do yourself a favor. DON'T BUY THIS BOOK. I wouldn't even recommend that you check it out of the library.
