The chapters dealing with natural rubber and the synthetic elastomers are up-dated, and an entirely new chapter has been added on the thermoplastic elastomers, which have, of course, grown tremendously in importance. Another innovation is the addition of a new chapter, "Miscellaneous Elastomers," to take care of "old" elastomers, e.g., polysulfides, which have decreased some� what in importance, as well as to introduce some of the newly-developed syn� thetic rubbers which have not yet reached high production levels. The editor wishes to express his sincere appreciation to all the contributors, without whose close cooperation this task would have been impossible. He would especially like to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of Dr. Howard Stephens in the planning of this book, and for his suggestion of suitable authors.

Anideal book for the beginner in practicing rubber technology.Though product recipies are not fully covered guidelines are given ,more for practicing technoligist with a background and experience.On carbon black the previous edition was more informative for a beginner.Some thumb rules canbe added for compounders to formulate polymer-wise.Some non conventional polymers like silican rubbers more light could be thrown abuot D V system.Another annex could be added for polymers introudeced recently like sindiotactic poly-butadiene.

Great set

An excellent introduction to Plato's philosophy. If you're interested in the historical figure of Socrates, these dialogues are most are most concerned with his life.

Philosophically, these "Five Dialogues"--Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, Meno, Phaedo--along with Phaedrus, Symposium and the Republic form the bulk of Plato's thought on Forms and the soul. This is a great place to start. The Euthyphro is a typical early dialogue and sets the stage for the charges that face later Socrates in the Apology. Both are very readable. Crito and Phaedo show Socrates in prison accepting his fate with poise and refusing to escape. They are also the most vivid explanation of the immortality of the soul. Meno is a middle dialogue that poses important problems of knowledge and learning resolved by the theory of Forms and Recollection. It's also the most difficult and rewarding of the bunch.

This Hackett edition is nice but not great. The dialogues are the Grube translation, edited by Cooper. The introduction by Grube is rather short and just explains the logic behind the grouping of the five dialogues, which is disappointing compared to other Hackett's. However, the translation is good, if a bit literal. There are explanatory footnotes for all of Socrates' idioms and historical references.

The margins and book design are nice and readable for such a compact book. The main advantage this little 8x5 paperback has is that it's cheap, easy to carry, and perfect for writing in. I feel the same way about the other excellent Hackett editions of "Symposium", "Phaedrus", and "Laches and Charmides". Now that my interest in Plato has solidified, I will likely invest in the Hardcover collection "Plato: Complete Works". However, you will miss out on the introductions found in the individual Hackett's, in particular Symposium's and Phaedrus which are fantastic.

Considerably Profound yet Easy to Read

The philosophies of Socrates and Plato have transcended generations for thousands of years and are still considered the foundation of all modern philosophy. Although the authenticity of even the existence of Socrates is not entirely clear, the dialogs presented by Plato offer a powerful illustration of reason and wisdom presented in an easily read format.

Socrates has a remarkable wit and sense about his demeanor; admitting full ignorance yet displaying true wisdom in his manner of questioning. The first dialog with Euthyphro exemplifies the power of clarity and simplification by how quickly Socrates is able to identify contradictory statements in Euthyphro's reasoning merely by asking questions. It is immediately obvious how profound this dialog is shown by Socrates' ability to quickly discover either truth or ignorance, and his intention will give pause to any reader.

The Apology and the dialogs with Crito and Meno all further define Socrates' thoughts on life and character encircled around his trial, conviction, and eventual death; each dialog as profound as the next. The concluding dialog with Phaedo is a discussion of Socrates' views on the afterlife, which includes a powerful rationale for his beliefs. If you seek to explore ideas regarding life and death, this dialog is essential reading.

This book is short and easily read yet contains considerable thought provoking material. Among the abundance of books available on philosophy, the Five Dialogs should be among the first for anyone with an interest in the matter.

It is used to find a set of inlet variables to minimize the stickiness in spray drying of sugar-rich foods.

Good Introduction

This is a very good introductory book on Graph Theory. If you don't want to be overwhelmed by Doug West's, etc., and yet receive a decent introduction to the topic, this book is your best bet. It covers all the topics required for an advanced undergrad course or a graduate level graph theory course for Math, engineering, operations research or computer science students in good depth and details. There are good examples and interesting exercises; some computer codes (JAVA) are also available in the book implementing some of the algorithms.

I would say O.R. and CS people will benefit a lot from it both as a reference or a textbook if adapted for a one semester graduate course. The only drawback is the price!

From the first centuries of its existence, the Church has interpreted the historical events recounted in the Old Testament as being "types" or "figures" of the events of the New Testament and of the sacraments instituted by Jesus Christ. Jean Cardinal Danielou, one of the foremost Catholic scholars of the twentieth century, and a theologian especially concerned with the relationship between history and the Christian revelation, examines in this book the typological interpretation of the Fathers of the Church and their contemporaries during the first three centuries of the Christian era. Among examples he discusses are the crossing of the Jordan by the Israelites as a type of baptism, Rahab as a type of the Church, and the fall of Jericho as a figure of the end of the world. The complex interpretations of Adam, the flood, and the sacrifice and marriage of Isaac are also described in full and commented on. The work is divided into five books entitled "Adam in Paradise," "Noah and the Flood," "The Sacrifice of Isaac," "Moses and the Exodus," and "The Cycle of Joshua". Each book is divided into chapters discussing the various types and the interpretations of Irenaeus, Clement, Gregory of Nyssa and their contemporaries, including Philo.

Fascinating in some chapters, dull in others

Danielou's examination of how the early church fathers interpreted the Old Testament is a book of uneven quality in my opinion. I waffled on whether to give the book 3 or 4 stars, so 3.5 is probably what it deserves. The book lays out in detail several examples of Old Testament typology, focusing on the first 6 books of the Bible, Genesis through Joshua. Typology is essentially the study of how Old Testament people, places, themes, and events foreshadow or outline New Testament realities in a prophetic or 'typical' way. For example the crossing of the Red Sea by the Israelites is a type of the future reality of Baptism, whereby Christians are washed clean from their slavery to sin (cf. slavery in Egypt). The actual content and interpretations in typology that Danielou provides is quite good. I especially enjoyed the section on Rahab as a type of the Church, and the comparision of Adam and Christ. The parts of the book that really dragged, and were uninteresting was Danielou's rather wordy descriptions of what the church father's meant, and the sections that dealt with allegories. It was helpful, however, that Danielou spent some time distinguishing allegory (which he rejects) and the hermeneutics of typology. But, he did this multiple times, and the example of the allegory of the ark should have been enough to get his point across. Overall I enjoyed the insight that came from quoting his sources, but I didn't find Danielou's commentary very interesting. Some chapters on allegory in particular are worth skipping altogether.

Biblical typology is almost a lost art to many Christians who are unfamiliar with the writings of the early Church Fathers or the great Saints of the Middle Ages, all of whom were steeped in the mystical tradition. It was critical to the early Church Fathers to demonstrate the fulfillment of the prophecies about the Messiah which fill the Old Testament and to show how the "types" of the Old Testament are fulfilled in the sacraments given to the Church by Christ. Some examples are the Mystagogical Lectures of St. Cyril of Jerusalem or De Mysteriis and De Sacramentis by St. Ambrose. It is also important to recognize that understanding the liturgy more fully is not possible without understanding the biblical typology upon which it rests.

Origen and the Alexandrian School of Scriptural interpretation especially brought out the spiritual richness of the developing tradition, which goes back to the Jewish scholar Philo. However, even the more literally focused Antioch School spoke of types, though their interpretation differed. For example, the Antiochian school saw the water from the rock in the desert as a type of Eucharist (which comes from the Pauline tradition), while the Alexandrian school saw it as a type of Baptism (from the Johannine tradition). Yet as Danielou notes "we meet an agreement of all schools upon the fundamental types." Thus, he can conclude, "This proves that we are face to face with something which is part and parcel of the deposit of Revelation."

The chapters tell the story of the richness of the biblical typology presented, which only skims the surface of all that the Scriptures hold: Book I: Adam and Paradise; Book II: Noah and the Flood; Book III: The Sacrifice of Isaac; Book IV: Moses and the Exodus; Book V: The Cycle of Joshua. Cardinal Danielou does not have time to explore the history of the origins of typological exegesis but what he gives us is rich fare indeed. This receives my highest recommendation for those seeking to deepen their faith in Jesus Christ.

Essential Reading for Medievalists

Jean Dani�lou, a Jesuit priest made Cardinal by Paul VI, was a theologian and one if the architects of Vatican II. He was also the author of works on the history of patristic theology and exegesis and the liturgy, which earned him fauteuil 32 in the Acad�mie Fran�aise. His book on biblical typology, Sacramentum futuri; �tudes sur les origines de la typologie biblique (Paris: Beauchesne, 1950) was translated into English in 1960 by a fellow Jesuit, Wulstan Hibberd, under the title From Shadows to Reality. This study remains to this day at the top of the list of must-read works on the subject, along with Henri de Lubac"s Ex�g�se m�dievale: Les Quatre Sens de l'�criture and La th�ologie au douzieme siecle, (Paris, Vrin 1957) by M.D. Chenu. Possessed of an encyclopedic knowledge of patristics, Dani�lou condenses thousands of pages early Christian exegetical texts, which range from the brilliant to the banal, into a short, concise survey useful to scholars and yet accessible to the (educated) general reader. The sections on allegory are important as they bring out the rhetorical dimension of the typological figura and allow one to see how typology was not just a collection of Old and New Testament parallels, but a full-blown epistemology that permeated all aspects of medieval writing on almost any subject. As such, From Shadows to Reality is essential reading for all medievalists.

Apart from their real merits, Dani�lou's book, along with those of Lubac and Chenu, are still essential reading on the subject of biblical typology because no major works on the subject have been published since the 1950s. The price of a reprint of the 1960 translation ($200) is not going to gain Dani�lou's book many new admirers.

Of related interest is Philippe Buc's L'Ambiguite du Livre: Prince, pouvoir, et peuple dans les commentaires de la Bible au Moyen Age (Paris, 1994), which examines with the social, political and ideological dimensions of the medieval biblical commentaries and glosses.
