From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7 Lister, has, with some success, retold Homer's famed epic for children. Rather than beginning the story in the traditional way, after the battle of Troy, his version begins with the shipwreck on Phaeacia. Odysseus sets the scene with the help of the bard, Demodocus, then tells his story. For a young audience, this flashback technique is confusing and unwieldy. Then, in the next three chapters, Lister crowds all of the historical facts and names that he removed from the beginning. He also tries, mostly in early chapters, to update some of the language while maintaining the tone of the story. The result is uneven and, in some places, humorous; for example, when the Cyclops growls at his uninvited guests, ``Who the hell are you?'' However, Lister's telling improves as the book progresses, and the picture book format with, for the most part, effective, sometimes exciting, full-color illustrations, makes this new version of the Odyssey, while not preferable to those of Picard (Walck, 1952; o.p.), Church (Macmillan, 1951; o.p.), Watson (Golden, 1964; o.p.), and Colum (Macmillan, 1925; o.p.), at least another good choice. Review
From Barnes & Noble
The greatest adventure story of all time, this epic work chronicles Odysseus's return from the Trojan War and the trials he endures on his journey home. Filled with magic, mystery, and an assortment of gods & goddesses who meddle freely in the affairs of men.

Katherine A. Powers - Washington Post
Susan Sarandon reads an introduction by Tom Palaima as well as synopses of each book, all of which are included in a useful little booklet. Lombardo, a veteran of many performances of his translation, delivers the poem himself in a well-modulated, walnutty voice that occasionally roars out dramatically to handle the more exuberant, even bumptious, passages.

Very Good Introduction to Homer - a review of "The Odyssey" (R. Lister)
By The Invisible Pam
The Odyssey is one of the epic poems penned by Homer. Along with the Iliad, it used to be part and parcel of most educational programs, but with all the focus on the 3 R's these days, you can't hardly count on your child being exposed to either.

In this book, the story begins with Odysseus' shipwreck. After serving the Greeks before the walls of Troy for 10 long years, Odysseus longs to return home, and he sets sail only to run afoul of god Poseidon. What follows are a series of exciting disasters that eventually leaves Odysseus the lone survivor of his crew. He eventually makes his way home, with the help of several divine women, only to find that his house has been taken over by the 'young punks' of Ithaca who have the audacity to try to murder his only son, steal his kingdom, and force his wife Penelope to remarry.

Four Stars. Good writing and nice artwork makes this book a stand-out introduction for children and adults. As it is an ancient story you should know that there are a few adult themes: monsters eat people, people slaughter people, and Circe takes our hero to her bed. It's all handed well, but those elements are there and the book would get a PG-rating from me (although these days it might very well be considered G-rated by others).

If you have particularly attentive younger children that are used to more sophisticated fare you could certainly use this book as a Read-aloud.

Another fine alternative would be Ms. Sutcliff's book "The Wanderings of Odysseus". In that review I contrast the two authors writing styles.

This book will have your kid or relitives want to read.THE ODYSSEY is one of the best booksive ever read in the whole world.

THE DAY THE WORLD CAME TO TOWN: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland, by Jim DeFede

"For the better part of a week, nearly every man, woman, and child in Gander and the surrounding smaller towns stopped what they were doing so they could help. They placed their lives on hold for a group of strangers and asked for nothing in return. They affirmed the basic goodness of man at a time when it was easy to doubt such humanity still existed."

When thirty-eight jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, on September 11, 2001, due to the closing of United States airspace, the citizens of this small community were called upon to come to the aid of more than six thousand displaced travelers.

Roxanne and Clarke Loper were excited to be on their way home from a lengthy and exhausting trip to Kazakhstan, where they had adopted a daughter, when their plane suddenly changed course and they found themselves in Newfoundland. Hannah and Dennis O'Rourke, who had been on vacation in Ireland, were forced to receive updates by telephone on the search for their son Kevin, who was among the firefighters missing at the World Trade Center. George Vitale, a New York state trooper and head of the governor's security detail in New York City who was returning from a trip to Dublin, struggled to locate his sister Patty, who worked in the Twin Towers. A family of Russian immigrants, on their way to the Seattle area to begin a new life, dealt with the uncertainty of conditions in their future home.

The people of Gander were asked to aid and care for these distraught travelers, as well as for thousands more, and their response was truly extraordinary. Oz Fudge, the town constable, searched all over Gander for a flight-crew member so that he could give her a hug as a favor to her sister, a fellow law enforcement officer who managed to reach him by phone. Eithne Smith, an elementary-school teacher, helped the passengers staying at her school put together letters to family members all over the world, which she then faxed. Bonnie Harris, Vi Tucker, and Linda Humby, members of a local animal protection agency, crawled into the jets' cargo holds to feed and care for all of the animals on the flights. Hundreds of people put their names on a list to take passengers into their homes and give them a chance to get cleaned up and relax.

The Day the World Came to Town is a positively heartwarming account of the citizens of Gander and its surrounding communities and the unexpected guests who were welcomed with exemplary kindness.

Amazon.com Review
The events of September 11 have seemingly been covered, analyzed, and discussed from every angle imaginable. So the subject matter alone of Jim DeFede's The Day the World Came to Town makes it noteworthy. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, 38 commercial airliners carrying over 6,000 passengers were forced, as a precautionary measure, to land in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada. Due to the ongoing closure of U.S. airspace, the passengers spent four days in this isolated town of 10,000 before being allowed to continue on their way. In that time, Gander's residents rallied together to extend a kind of hospitality that seems too expansive for the word hospitality. Townspeople not only opened schools and legion halls for use as emergency shelters, they invited the passengers into their homes for showers, meals, and warm beds while local businesses simply gave toiletries and clothing to passengers stuck without luggage. Despite the grim consequences that led to the situation, DeFede finds humor: two flight attendants are offered a car for sightseeing by a local woman who happened to be driving by; the stranded chairman of Hugo Boss finds himself shopping for men's underwear at the local Wal-Mart. But the real message of the book is how, even in times of great turmoil and conflict, people can and must look to one another for comfort, help, and hope. --John Moe

From Publishers Weekly
Journalist Defede calls our attention to a sidelight of the events of September 11, when the town of Gander (pop. 10,000) was overwhelmed by more than 6,500 air travelers grounded when U.S. airspace was shut down. For a week, DeFede relates, the locals provided food, shelter and supplies and reassurance; "they placed their lives on hold for a group of strangers and asked nothing in return." Here the generous Newfoundlanders get due recognition. Photos. (Sept.)

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Through selective interviews, this book describes events surrounding the 6595 people on board 38 planes whose transit across the Atlantic was disrupted when they were vectored to the airport in Gander, Newfoundland, on September 11, 2001. As a chronicle of the heartwarming reception these passengers received from touchdown until departure six days later, the volume resounds with tributes to the kindness and acts of generosity on the part of local residents (population 10,000). Quick-thinking initiatives led by the mayor, constable, air-traffic controllers, and local heads of professional disaster-relief agencies organized a process for greeting deplaning passengers; checking luggage; fulfilling immigration/security requirements; and then transporting groups to churches, schools, and community centers where they were housed and fed. One account tells of volunteers from Gander's SPCA who crawled through the cargo spaces of the jetliners, locating pets and animals in cages, and bringing them food, water, and fresh bedding until they could be moved to a vacant hangar. Separate vignettes focus on the parents of a New York City firefighter who was missing, on a Texas couple returning from adopting an orphan in Kazakhstan, on a teenage cancer victim en route home following a "make- a-wish" trip to Italy, and more. Each of these stories will resonate with teens.

An inspiring account of how people took a day of destruction and turned into days of hope, care, solace, and humanity.
By Kiwiwriter
I am basically a cynic who utterly lacks empathy, and regards the world as a cruel, vicious, heartless, place, dominated by sadists, egomaniacs, megalomaniacs, and jumped-up eighth grade bullies, who take joy in stomping weaker people in the face. I believe that the world is not based on human rights, laws, and ethics, but on one word: power...getting it, having it, using it, getting more of it.

So when I read this book, I had all my views flung into the Hudson River. Amid one of the most horrific days in human history, when 19 fanatics cold-bloodedly butchered thousands of human beings in a series of well-planned and ghastly attacks, the people of a fairly small town in a quiet and relatively obscure corner of the world displayed the highest levels of humanity, warmth, and hospitality, taking into their homes, schools, gymnasiums, and hearts thousands of innocent travelers who were caught stranded by this horror of history.

"The Day the World Came to Town" tells of how ordinary Canadians and equally ordinary airline passengers coped with being trapped together in the town of Gander during the days in which the entire United States' airspace was shut down. The small airport was packed with planes from all over the world, the town with people from across the globe, of every ethnicity, faith, and type.

The Canadians did everything possible to make these unsought guests as comfortable and welcome as possible. The guests in turn did everything they could to minimize their footprint on the town. And when they left, they did everything they could to thank the community -- there are scholarships established by some of the groups of then-stranded passengers to support education there: here is the website for one of them, run by the Columbus Foundation:

https://tcfapp.org/SecureFolder/Scholarship/ScholarshipDetails.aspx?ScholarshipKey=175

And the passengers built warm personal relationships with the folks in Gander, going back for the 10th anniversary:

http://petergreenberg.com/2011/09/08/ten-years-after-911-refugees-return-to-gander-newfoundland/

The writing is warm, close, lyrical, and focuses on people...the local Hugo Boss owner who gets to meet the big chief when his plane is stranded there...the family bringing home an adopted child from Eastern Europe...another family worried about the fate of their NYFD firefighter nephew (I won't give that ending away)...the London Rabbi who needs a special diet and wants to help others...the local residents who provide everything they have to visitors...the RSPCA inspectors who take care of the pets on the planes...the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sergeant who gets permission to wear the "red serge" when the passengers finally leave...the famous artist's gift to a school.

After reading this book, I found myself having faith in humanity again. Maybe, in spite of the endless cavalcade of bullies, bad news, sadists, terrorists, uncaring rulers, tyrants, self-serving egomaniacs, and other human monsters that seem to define, rule, and carve up the world to their benefit...human beings are not so bad after all.

Maybe Anne Frank was right: "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are good at heart."

This book makes you believe that.

the kindness of strangers
By Lori
On 9/11 thousands of passengers from thirty-eight international flights were stranded in Gander, Newfoundland. Unable to get off their planes for many hours, hungry and uncomfortable and with babies crying, these people, once allowed to disembark, were welcomed with open arms and generous hearts by the citizens of Gander and surrounding towns. People who on the surface had nothing in common had their lives entwined and became close.

One stranded couple DeFede follows had a family member who was thought to be at the Trade Center. For days they were unable to get information about their loved one but their hosts in Gander never stopped trying and ultimately succeeded in learning his fate. The animals stowed in cargo were treated with tender loving care. Some inhabitants turned their entire houses over to passengers, with instructions to take what they wanted and just close the door on their way out. In this small town solutions were found and accommodations made for an Orthodox Jew and a number of passengers who spoke no English.

The author does a very good job of juggling many different stories and locations. DeFede's book shines a light on the best of humanity during the darkest of times.

An inspiring story of 9/11
By David Jones
The Day the World Came to Town is one of the best books I have ever read. I'm a 66 year old journalist and I've read a few books so I consider myself a reasonable judge. Although I'm an Australian, I happened to be in New York City recently at the time of the fifteenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. So it was particularly uplifting to read this wonderful account of how the equally wonderful people of Gander and Newfoundland embraced the thousands of international airline passengers forced to land in Gander after US air space was closed. They did themselves and all of humanity proud in going way beyond what might have been expected of them. It's rare to read something uplifting about the events of 9/11 but this book is one of them. Like Canada, we are a Commonwealth country and I like to think that Australians would be just as generous of spirit as these Newfoundlanders. We can only hope being put to this test will never be required. Gander certainly passed the test when it confronted them. Now I want to visit Gander for myself.

Owen - Book One of the Tudor Trilogy, by Tony Riches

England 1422: Owen Tudor, a Welsh servant, waits in Windsor Castle to meet his new mistress, the beautiful and lonely Queen Catherine of Valois, widow of the warrior king, Henry V. Her infant son is crowned King of England and France, and while the country simmers on the brink of civil war, Owen becomes her protector.

They fall in love, risking Owen’s life and Queen Catherine’s reputation—but how do they found the dynasty which changes British history – the Tudors?

This is the first historical novel to fully explore the amazing life of Owen Tudor, grandfather of King Henry VII and the great-grandfather of King Henry VIII. Set against a background of the conflict between the Houses of Lancaster and York, which develops into what have become known as the Wars of the Roses, Owen’s story deserves to be told.

Owen - Book One of the Tudor Trilogy is a new addition to story of the Tudors in the historical fiction tradition of C J Sansom, Conn Iggulden, Philippa Gregory and Hilary Mantel.

Intelligent historical read
By AlisonW
I love a good, intelligent historical novel. There are so many out there, and I have to be honest and say that, on many occasions, I have bought a promising looking book, only to abandon it within the first few chapters. Very often, the detail won't be right, or the characters will behave in a way that just isn't realistic for the time. One of the main issues though is that the dialogue can be so hard to get right. I've read so many historical novels where the characters use words that just wouldn't have been around in the period in which they are set, or, alternatively, where the writer is so keen to make the dialogue authentic that they overdo it and render the book unreadable.
I'm pleased to say that neither of those things were issues in this book. The historical detail was rich and informative. I felt as though I learned a great deal about this particular period of history while immersed completely in Owen's story. And the language was spot on too. Nothing felt out of place.
The story is fascinating. Owen Tudor, a Welsh servant, falls in love with Queen Catherine of Valois, the widow of King Henry V. I had never heard of Owen, and knew nothing of his remarkable story. Their romance, and the dangers it brings, is played out against the background of the conflicts, intrigues and betrayals of the time that led to the War of the Roses.
Riches certainly knows his subject. There was so much detail here. The reader is carried from Windsor, to Wales, to France, into battles and life at court, with rich detail at every turn.
I felt though, that there was so much detail here, so much going on, that Owen's own story was a little lost at times - in terms of his emotions and feelings. I didn't always feel connected to him, even though the novel is written in first person. It felt sometimes as though he was dashing from one event to another without pause for breath. When tragedy struck, I didn't always feel that Owen's feelings came across.
The novel is written in present tense which was a bit off-putting for me. While present tense can bring immediacy to a story, I do think this would have worked better in past tense. Having said that, the writing was solid.
I do recommend this to those who enjoy historical novels. It's a thoughtful, intelligent book that doesn't disappoint.

Excellent book of early Tudors.
By K. Hacker
I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written book. I did enjoy the telling of the story in the first person. The story of Owen Tudor is so often just a side note in the telling of the War of the Roses and the Tudors. The fact that this man would marry the former Queen of England and the sister of the King of France is fascinating. Of interest to me is the mental illness by Catherine and her son Henry VI. Could this have caused the mercurial moods of Henry VII and Henry VIII? I am looking forward to the next books about Jasper and Henry VII.

The Servant who Married a Queen and Fathered a Royal Dynasty.
By Robin E. Levin
Catherine of Valois was a prize of war. After Henry V of England defeated the French in the famous battle of Agincourt, part of the peace settlement was that the daughter of the French King Charles VI would marry Henry. The marriage between the English King and the French princess was short-lived because he died of the flux in 1422, leaving Catherine with and infant son.
Owain ap Maredydd ap Tudur , whose name was anglicized to Owen Tudor, was the disenfranchised son of a Welsh nobleman. Having lost his patrimony, he became a soldier of fortune and fought with King Henry’s bowman in France. After Henry’s death he became a retainer in the dowager Queen’s household, the master of her wardrobe, charged, essentially with running the household.
The story is told from the point of view of Owen, who, despite a dalliance with the Queen’s maid Juliette, falls deeply in love with the Queen. Once the young Prince Henry is removed from the household to undertake his training for the Kingship, Catherine takes notice of the devoted Owen and begins to return his affection. They marry in secret and set up household in Much Hadam, a quiet village some forty miles north of London. They know that their marriage will not be approved by Sir Humphrey and Sir Beaufort, the advisors of the young King, and they endeavor to keep the marriage secret as long as possible. During the years of their marriage, Catherine gives birth to three sons, but she dies in childbirth after giving birth to a daughter. The baby dies after a week. By this time their marriage has been discovered by the Prince’s counselors and Owen is in big trouble.
After a stint in Newgate Prison, Owen is released thanks to the mercy of the young King. Eventually Owen’s sons, Edmund and Jasper become favorites of the King, who is, after all their half-brother. Edmund marries Margaret Beaufort and they give Owen a grandson, Henry. There is a cloud on the horizon as the Richard, the Duke of York is determined to wrest the throne of England from the feckless King, Henry VI. Owen’s sons attempt to reconcile the factions but are finally forced to support their half- brother the King in a bitter and prolonged civil war.
Tony Riches has written a fascinating account of a troubled period in English history and a sympathetic portrait of a romantic relationship between two people of very unequal rank which would spawn a dynasty.

Beware of the reviews
By In_my_humble_opinion
Wish I had spent more time evaluating the reviews before purchasing. Apparently, I am one of the few people who actually paid for this book on Amazon. At least 23 of the reviewers received a free copy of the book in exchange for a “fair and honest” review. I found almost no reviews that mentioned actually trying the meal plans.

The book contains some useful information and many, many recipes. If that is what you are looking for, this may be a good purchase for you. The meal plans, however, are highly unrealistic. The estimated prep/cook times are a joke and the number of ingredients within a week is through the roof. If you have no job but a whole bunch of money, then these plans might work. Also, other than the breakfast smoothies, the plans don’t offer any beverage guidance. The book mentions several beverages to avoid (e.g. milk, alcohol, caffeinated beverages), but does not offer much information on what is beneficial to drink. Should I restrict my intake to water? I love water, but, even for me, only drinking water would feel too much like a diet and not enough like an achievable meal plan.

In short, if you are looking for a realistic meal plan to address your inflammation issues, skip this book. If you are looking for a variety of recipes with foods that some experts have identified as helping reduce inflammation, buy this book. Especially if you like coconut.

Reduce Inflammation and Get Back to Life
By Rebecca groen
As someone who struggles with joint inflammation, headaches and constant bloating, I have constantly been told that medication is the answer to all my problems...and then they get worse...and then I over-medicate. I am a meat and potatoes type of girl and not very good at following 'diets' because I have a hard time being told what to eat, but I love that there are charts to suggest food to avoid (high inflammatory foods) and food you can eat as much as you want of (low inflammatory foods). Whether you are looking for a strict eating plan, or a timer-saver, this book provides you with all of the information you need to get started, with lots of options to cater to your taste preferences, boost your immune system and reduce inflammation throughout your body.

Great plans if you don't work.
By SoxFan82
I was frankly overwhelmed by the plans. Maybe that's my fault and not the fault of the book...but I'm a healthy eater already (no junk food), and with the "Time Saver Plan", I wrote down a shopping list of 49 different ingredients, many of them considered somewhat "exotic"...

...and that was just Monday - Wednesday of Week 1.

Enough said. Unless you're both wealthy & retired, who has time or this?

misteriosamente cautivadora
By Mariela Saravia Valverde

By Yennely Perez
