Helpful Introduction

R.T. France is widely recognized as one of the foremost scholars on Matthew's gospel. His commentary in the NICNT series is a pillar. Anyone who wishes to do any study in Matthew must interact with France. Yet, by his own admission, no commentary can cover every issue raised by a biblical book. There are many implications, corrollaries and challenges that do not fit in a textual commentary but are necessary and important subjects to explore. This volume was meant to be a companion to three other volumes written on the other gospels ("Mark: Evangelist and Theologian" by R.P. Martin; "Luke: Historian and Theologian" by I. Howard Marshall; "John: Evangelist and Interpreter" by Stephen S. Smalley). It was also meant to explore the important subjects surrounding Matthean studies.

The first half of the book focuses on issues of authorship and composition. France begins with an exploration of the "first" gospel - who wrote first? Here he tackles the age-old subjects of Markan priority, Matthean priority, Q and others. Second, France moves onto authorship. France argues that the traditional understanding makes the most sense of the data. While he affirms that Matthew the tax collector is Matthew's author, he is hesitant to assign absolute significance to it. He believes that we can affirm it's inspiration even if it's conclusively demonstrated that the former tax collector did not write it. From here he moves on to issues of audience in chapter three and genre in chapter four.

Chapters five through eight move from issues of authorship and composition to literary and theological features. Here he covers Matthew's use of Old Testament texts and typological fulfillment in the person of Christ. Chapter six follows five by exploring the Matthean theme of Jesus as 'Israel'. He is presented as 'true Israel', the embodiment of the people of God and their representative. The final two chapters explore Matthew's teaching on the Church and the Gospel. His presentation is unique in the canon, but not at odds with the rest of the canon. This is an excellent book worth the time necessary to read it. France is an expert guide in the study of Matthew's gospel.

Excellent shorter (345 pages) Commentary on Matthew

France's excellent longer commentary on Matthew The Gospel of Matthew (New International Commentary on the New Testament) is incredible, but if you are looking for a commentary that is less than a thousand pages, this is it. In fact, since France starts with some introductory material that isn't all that unique, you are talking about 200 + pages of cream! It is wonderful. France goes over literary aspects of the Gospel (key to interpretation) and he lays out the parallel and chiastic structure in easy to see charts/outlines that enable the reader to glean information quickly. It is a treasure, to be sure. Skip the first 120 pages and you will start with Chapter 4 of pure insights and discoveries that will help with this challenging book. A hidden gem for a pastor or teacher.

A Good First Book on the Evangelist Matthew

Well its time in the lectionary cycle for the gospel of Matthew and you didn't cover it in seminary. And you have all those texts waiting for your exegesis, exposition, and explanation--and you don't know what to say or where to begin. Do you just jump straight into the commentaries? Are there some other books that might be worthwhile reading as a start? If this is the scenario in which you find yourself, France's introduction here is a marvelous book to begin to work through. The issues are presented fairly, the sum of recent scholarship is covered quickly and accurately, and the theology of the evangelist is presented as a beginning for further study. In this book France covers:

1.) Matthew as the first canonical gospel
2.) Just who was "Matthew" anyway
3.) The setting of the gospel and its literary character
4.) What do we mean by Jesus being the 'fulfillment' of Israel's hopes and dreams?
5.) The relationship between Matthew as a gospel and the people of Israel
6.) Matthew's gospel and the church (is the church the new Israel?)
7.) What does Matthew say about Jesus and how is Jesus presented in this gospel?

If you desire to be a prepared preacher when mounting the pulpit on Sunday morning this book will help in that process.

Covers the bases

I'm a recent college grad working as a freelancer for weddings and special events (I'm a harpist) and taxes are a small nightmare for me, much less investing.

But as a freelancer, I must learn to invest- It would be absolutely foolish of me not to. Realistically, if I don't I won't be able to retire when I'd like to nor will I have as much money to live comfortably. With that in mind, I've been checking out a few investment books in my free time, and this was one of them. It covers all the bases you'd expect, but also some that fall into the category of 'why didn't I think of that' as well as 'that's pretty legit advice. He knows what he's talking about'.

Joseph Matthews explains what's important with ease; compound interest, investment protection, and inflation are all covered without needless Jargon so anyone can understand what he's talking about without the need for further questions. A recommended read for those starting out.

Well-written guide on investments

This is a surprisingly well-written guide on investments for beginners. The book starts out introducing the general concepts of wealth creation using compounding interest (the rule of 72). It continues to explain all the different types of investment instruments available such as stocks, bonds, options, futures, commodities and mutual funds. I particularly love the advice given on risk management and portfolio diversification. The last chapter on 401k investment is a real bonus. The only topic this book does not cover is real estate investment. If you don't know how to invest with your money, this 11-chapter book will give you a good head start.

Great book on the basics of investing. Whether you went to school for Business or not, this book, provides you with much needed information about important investing items such as understanding compound interest, the risks involved with investing, inflation, and how to successfully invest in stocks, bonds, commodities, mutual funds, options and a 401k plan.
If you are new to investing and are trying to understand the ins and outs of how to invest and what you can expect from your investments over time, "Investing: How to Generate Wealth in today's Market" is the book you should pick up. I highly recommend this book!

One of the true classics of UFO literature

One of the true pioneers in the field of Ufology (UFO research) was Dr. J. Allen Hynek (1910-1986), an astronomer at Northwestern University in Chicago. From 1948 to 1969 he served as the top scientific consultant to "Project Blue Book", the US Air Force's official group which investigated UFO sightings and incidents. What makes Hynek especially credible is that he started out as a debunker - he thought UFOs were "nonsense" and helped the Air Force to debunk most sightings. However, as the years passed he gradually became convinced that some UFO sightings were not hoaxes or misidentified "normal" phenomena such as stars, balloons, meteors, etc. He also became increasingly unhappy with Project Blue Book's highly negative attitude towards UFOs, and in the late sixties he became openly critical of how Blue Book's staff "investigated" UFO reports (in many cases they didn't bother to make even a brief investigation of a UFO sighting - they simply made up an explanation and filed it away). When the Air Force shut down Project Blue Book in 1969, Dr. Hynek founded his own organization to study UFO reports (called the Center for UFO Studies, or CUFOS, it still exists today). He also worked tirelessly - albeit with limited success - to encourage his fellow scientists to take the UFO phenomenon more seriously. In the 1970's Dr. Hynek wrote two "serious" studies of the UFO phenomenon, and both books are today considered to be "classics" in the study of UFOs. The "Hynek UFO Report", originally published in 1977, offers UFO cases taken directly from the once-secret files of Project Blue Book. Dr. Hynek describes dozens of impressive, hard-to-explain UFO cases that cannot be easily dismissed as hoaxes or mundane phenomena such as birds, balloons, ball lightning, etc. The book is also well-written and Hynek displays a dry wit throughout the text. If you're a serious reader of the UFO phenomenon, then the "Hynek UFO Report" is a "must" for your library, but even if you're a general reader looking to read a good book about UFOs, then the "Hynek UFO Report" presents credible sightings that will hold your attention - and grip your imagination - for hours on end. Highly recommended.

A rational discussion of the UFO phenomena

If there's one book that you want to read on the UFO phenomena, then I'd suggest getting a copy of this one. J. Allan Hynek originally worked on Project Blue Book, the U.S. Air Force's attempt to "study" and ultimately debunk, the numerous UFO sightings that were occuring after 1947. A trained scientist, he was a skeptic at first, but soon came to the conclusion that in a very small number of cases, something truly unexplained had occured. In a field where much has been published that is simply outrageous and fabricated, The Hynek UFO Report is rational, logical and realistic. I myself am somewhat of a skeptic, and I appreciate the manner in which Hynek addresses the issue; while still not totally convinced that UFOs are alien spacecraft, I have to concede that something unexplained has been happening in the skies over many nations on this planet.

The best book on Project Blue Book

Basically the government started Project Blue Book as a way to stifle public interest/awareness in UFO's - for whatever reasons they might have had. Whether they were trying to reduce public hysteria (especially after the 1947 Kenneth Arnold sighting), or they were trying to debunk the whole phenomenon altogether, no one really knows. All that mattered was that no one talked about UFO's. But despite Blue Book's attempt to label everything a hoax, many cases still went unsolved.

The Original "Odd Couple"

Being a huge fan of "The Odd Couple" television series, I finally decided to read the play on which the TV show is based. THE ODD COUPLE, which premiered in 1965, was Neil Simon's first big success. His writing is consistently amusing and often flat-out hilarious; I laughed especially hard during the first scene, in which Oscar Madison and his poker-playing friends are trying to prevent Felix Unger, just thrown out of his home by his wife, from committing suicide! This "episode" was, of course, the starting point for the TV series, but unlike the show, the play has a single plot: Felix and Oscar get together, quarrel, date the Pigeon sisters, quarrel again, and ultimately "break up." Though the play is a comedy, there are interesting parallels to A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE in Oscar's poker games, particularly the one in the last scene during which Felix leaves. THE ODD COUPLE is an excellent example of Simon's wit. Next, I would love to see it onstage!

When you pair David Paymer and Nathan Lane as Felix and Oscar in the Odd Couple, you are in for a comic tour de force that over stretches its material. With a supporting cast which includes Dan Castellaneta and Yeardley Smith (both from The Simpsons) and Linda Purl, the cast is almost perfect. This production is a little too visual in a few of its jokes. However, on the whole, it unscrupulously grabs the audio listener by his ears and shakes him with laughter.

Classic American Comedy.

Before the movie, before the television series, before all the spin offs, there was just the play. The story is a classic spin on the buddy plot. Oscar Madison is a successful sports writer who happens to be best friends with Felix Unger, a newswriter for CBS. Each week Oscar has five of his buddies over for a Friday night game of poker. However, on one fateful night Felix fails to appear in time for the game. It turns out Felix has just been thrown out by his wife and has no place to go. Feeling sorry for his old friend, Oscar invites Felix to stay with him and be his roommate. What ensues is a classic Neil Simon look at friendship that will endure for ages.
