You'll need another source of info to avoid pitfalls

like many other Lonely Planet guides, it is skimpy in the art and history part of the tour book, excellent in the practical advice sections, and overflowing in the nightlife and entertainment (other traveller might disagree with my assessment). I found it disappointing to find that this guide, which was allegedly revised for 2015, does not mention sections of the Great Wall (near Beijing) that have been open to tourist since 2008, and still includes stores which have been closed for at least 5 years. The enclosed map is good for the downtown part of the city, but leaves out the Olympic Park and the Summer Palace. Regrettably it shows only one street every three (or so) and names only one street every three that are shown: a better map would be a great addition. Even the propaganda maps offered but he touristic bureau are a step up from the one included. very good cross references from text to maps to index.

A useful but flawed city guide

My first impression of the 10th edition of this tome is how much it's like the ninth edition. Oh, it's usually updated where it needs to be, especially in the detachable city and subway map, which is one of the best features of this guide. But the organization and layout is very similar; even the number of pages in the two editions is exactly the same. If one has the ninth edition and is aware of Beijing events since April 2013 (higher public-transportation and taxi costs, the departure of businesses surrounding the Bell and Drum Towers), you may be able to forgo this volume.
The 10th edition still is well-organized, with colorful maps within the book and descriptions of what to find and where, and much of the advice on tourist sites, restaurants and bars is good. The beginning of the book still has the helpful "Beijing's Top 13," although the order of the must-see, must-do highlights has inexplicably changed. The caveats on scams are must-reads, at least the one on page 17 in the "Need to Know" section.
An underrated benefit of the book is that the Romanization of Mandarin place names and key phrases uses the Pinyin diacritical marks. This is no small deal; the marks indicate the tone of the syllable, and the wrong tone can completely change a word's meaning. For example, the Mandarin words for "buy" and "sell" both sound like the English word "my," so you had better know which tone to use! Even if you speak only a little Mandarin, the tonal marks are very, very useful.
On the downside, the book has some irritations and odd omissions. Beginning with the ninth edition and continuing in the 10th, the book eschews reviews of many major Western-style restaurants and bars in favor of small, quaint and out-of-the-way places in Beijing's many historical "hútòng" (alleys). Major Asian restaurants are still listed, so the authors must assume that their readers have no interest in eating anything resembling what they eat back home for the duration of their visit. So if you're in Beijing for a while and want a break from Peking duck, you wouldn't know about places like Blue Frog, Lily's American Diner, Grandma's Kitchen or even Hooters. If you're looking for a larger, upscale bar, you wouldn't know about The World of Suzie Wong Club (which, despite its name, is not THAT kind of place). But the guide WILL tell you about many tiny dives far off the beaten track like Mao Mao Chong's and El Nido. One hopes the 11th edition will strike for more balance, or maybe add a few pages to get it all in.
Another glaring omission is in the listing of foreigner-friendly supermarkets, which once again fails to include Jenny Lou's — a chain of stores that is easily the best source of Western goods in Beijing. At least the ninth edition had a passing reference to Jenny Lou's, apparently by accident, in the review of rival April Gourmet, but the 10th edition doesn't even have that. Leaving out Jenny Lou's for two straight editions is inexcusable, especially since the authors obviously know of its existence. Come on, Lonely Planet, get your act together and put it back in. And while you're at it, add the BHG chain to the list as well.
The final gripe is about the write-up on the Mùtiányù section of the Great Wall. The authors obviously haven't been there since the massive new visitor center opened, completely changing the character of the place. This is now where tourists MUST go to catch a bus to that part of the wall, and where one can also find a large selection of restaurants and shops. The quaint little souvenir booths at the base of the Great Wall itself are gone. None of this is mentioned in the book. Maybe next time.
Despite the shortcomings, this book is worth picking up, especially for about $17. I'm just disappointed that it's not better.

Worth buying

This was a helpful guide. In particular the map was a life saver when I realized that google maps was not going to work on my phone (lovely china internet restrictions). I selected several sites to visit based on this guide. One thing I would have liked to read about are common scams that people might try to pull on you in Beijing. I had several attempted on me and wasn't quite sure what was going on.
The breakdowns of the different areas in Beijing are helpful and I appreciated the restaurant recommendations. I bought 3 books for my trip and this was my favorite.
