You'll need another source of info to avoid pitfalls

like many other Lonely Planet guides, it is skimpy in the art and history part of the tour book, excellent in the practical advice sections, and overflowing in the nightlife and entertainment (other traveller might disagree with my assessment). I found it disappointing to find that this guide, which was allegedly revised for 2015, does not mention sections of the Great Wall (near Beijing) that have been open to tourist since 2008, and still includes stores which have been closed for at least 5 years. The enclosed map is good for the downtown part of the city, but leaves out the Olympic Park and the Summer Palace. Regrettably it shows only one street every three (or so) and names only one street every three that are shown: a better map would be a great addition. Even the propaganda maps offered but he touristic bureau are a step up from the one included. very good cross references from text to maps to index.

A useful but flawed city guide

My first impression of the 10th edition of this tome is how much it's like the ninth edition. Oh, it's usually updated where it needs to be, especially in the detachable city and subway map, which is one of the best features of this guide. But the organization and layout is very similar; even the number of pages in the two editions is exactly the same. If one has the ninth edition and is aware of Beijing events since April 2013 (higher public-transportation and taxi costs, the departure of businesses surrounding the Bell and Drum Towers), you may be able to forgo this volume.

The 10th edition still is well-organized, with colorful maps within the book and descriptions of what to find and where, and much of the advice on tourist sites, restaurants and bars is good. The beginning of the book still has the helpful "Beijing's Top 13," although the order of the must-see, must-do highlights has inexplicably changed. The caveats on scams are must-reads, at least the one on page 17 in the "Need to Know" section.

An underrated benefit of the book is that the Romanization of Mandarin place names and key phrases uses the Pinyin diacritical marks. This is no small deal; the marks indicate the tone of the syllable, and the wrong tone can completely change a word's meaning. For example, the Mandarin words for "buy" and "sell" both sound like the English word "my," so you had better know which tone to use! Even if you speak only a little Mandarin, the tonal marks are very, very useful.

On the downside, the book has some irritations and odd omissions. Beginning with the ninth edition and continuing in the 10th, the book eschews reviews of many major Western-style restaurants and bars in favor of small, quaint and out-of-the-way places in Beijing's many historical "hútòng" (alleys). Major Asian restaurants are still listed, so the authors must assume that their readers have no interest in eating anything resembling what they eat back home for the duration of their visit. So if you're in Beijing for a while and want a break from Peking duck, you wouldn't know about places like Blue Frog, Lily's American Diner, Grandma's Kitchen or even Hooters. If you're looking for a larger, upscale bar, you wouldn't know about The World of Suzie Wong Club (which, despite its name, is not THAT kind of place). But the guide WILL tell you about many tiny dives far off the beaten track like Mao Mao Chong's and El Nido. One hopes the 11th edition will strike for more balance, or maybe add a few pages to get it all in.

Another glaring omission is in the listing of foreigner-friendly supermarkets, which once again fails to include Jenny Lou's — a chain of stores that is easily the best source of Western goods in Beijing. At least the ninth edition had a passing reference to Jenny Lou's, apparently by accident, in the review of rival April Gourmet, but the 10th edition doesn't even have that. Leaving out Jenny Lou's for two straight editions is inexcusable, especially since the authors obviously know of its existence. Come on, Lonely Planet, get your act together and put it back in. And while you're at it, add the BHG chain to the list as well.

The final gripe is about the write-up on the Mùtiányù section of the Great Wall. The authors obviously haven't been there since the massive new visitor center opened, completely changing the character of the place. This is now where tourists MUST go to catch a bus to that part of the wall, and where one can also find a large selection of restaurants and shops. The quaint little souvenir booths at the base of the Great Wall itself are gone. None of this is mentioned in the book. Maybe next time.

Despite the shortcomings, this book is worth picking up, especially for about $17. I'm just disappointed that it's not better.

Worth buying

This was a helpful guide. In particular the map was a life saver when I realized that google maps was not going to work on my phone (lovely china internet restrictions). I selected several sites to visit based on this guide. One thing I would have liked to read about are common scams that people might try to pull on you in Beijing. I had several attempted on me and wasn't quite sure what was going on.

The breakdowns of the different areas in Beijing are helpful and I appreciated the restaurant recommendations. I bought 3 books for my trip and this was my favorite.

Testimonials on the back come from none other than Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Rudy Giuliani, and Tom Brokaw, and other praise comes from Fortune, Business Week, and Financial Times. As the legendary retired CEO of General Electric, Welch has won many friends and admirers in high places. In this latest book, he strives to show why. Winning describes the management wisdom that Welch built up through four and a half decades of work at GE, as he transformed the industrial giant from a sleepy "Old Economy" company with a market capitalization of $4 billion to a dynamic new one worth nearly half a trillion dollars.

Welch's first book, Jack: Straight from the Gut, was structured more as a conventional CEO memoir, with stories of early career adventures, deals won and lost, boardroom encounters, and Welch's process and philosophy that helped propel his success as a manager. In Winning, Welch focuses on his actual management techniques. He starts with an overview of cultural values such as candor, differentiation among employees, and inclusion of all voices in decision-making. In the second section he covers issues around one's own company or organization: the importance of hiring, firing, the people management in between, and a few other juicy topics like crisis management. While different from the steadier stream of war stories and real-life examples of Welch's first book, Winning is a very worthwhile addition to any management bookshelf. It's not often that a CEO described as the century's best retires, and then chooses to expound on such a wide range of management topics. Also, aside from the commentary on always-relevant issues like employee performance reviews and quality control, Welch suffuses this book with his pugnacious spirit. Starred Review. One oft-heard comment about Welch's generally praised (and bestselling) 2001 memoir, Jack: Straight from the Gut, was that the book skimped on useful business advice. The respected but controversial former chief of General Electric pays readers back double here. Written with Welch's wife, a onetime editor of the Harvard Business Review, the book delivers a brilliant career's worth of consistently astute (and often iconoclastic) business wisdom and knowledge from the man Fortune magazine called "the manager of the century." Welch knows what he's talking about, and here offers an admirably concise primer on how to do business that's a paragon of tough common sense. From practices he employed at GE (e.g., the much-debated differentiation, which includes winnowing 10% of the workforce at regular intervals), to the personal qualities that lead to success (to Welch, candor is essential), to advice on job hunting and how to work with a bad boss, to ways to maximize the budget process (divorce it from performance rewards), Welch comments frankly and by myriad example, with a common touch that will draw readers in ("that was hardly the first time I'd gotten my clock cleaned by the press"). He explains upfront that the book arose as an attempt to codify his beliefs, in response to the many questions he's received at numerous public appearances since he retired from GE in 2001; as such the book has a somewhat lumpy feel, like an overstuffed bag of presents. But the writing, full of personality and ideas, is a model of clarity and insight, even on such dense subjects as the quality control program Six Sigma. It's difficult to think of anyone in business who wouldn't benefit from reading this savvy, engaging cubicle-to-boardroom guide to success; and it's likely, given Welch's reputation and the massive ad/promo HarperCollins is putting behind the book, that enough business people will want to read it to push it toward the top of the charts. This book is best thought of as a hybrid of a biography and ...

This book is best thought of as a hybrid of a biography and a teaching manual focused on managing people within a corporate setting. Welch reflects on his life in business, and talks openly about what he believes worked for him. I don't agree with every one of his suggestions. For example, Welch strongly recommends large businesses institute a culture in which top performers are rewarded greatly and bottom performers are regularly shown the door. It's not necessarily a bad system, but one could easily see thoughtless managers implementing it to the point of abuse. Also, I imagine there has to be a point where further staff turnover has diminishing returns and adversely affects morale.

However, one insight Welch makes in this book which I thought was hugely illimunating is the notion that mission statements, rather than being wishy-washy, should be tied to concrete, explicitly defined goals--ideally which possess metrics against which success can be measured. Welch has a background in science, and it wouldn't surprise me if the idea arose from that experience.

I'd very highly recommend this book for anyone thinking of taking on some kind of role in management, no matter at what level of business. Even if you don't agree with everything, Welch's frankness and wealth of experience provide some very stimulating material to pore over.

I read this book after I finished How Google Works. My brother-in-law recommended this book to me after I talked so much about How Google Works. We both said we will reach each other’s recommendation. I kept my words I am not sure if he kept his. Anyways, this book was quite a contrast to How Google Works. One was a technological giant that pioneered information industry while the other flourished by making things that were physical. Both companies can be bear the tag ‘Too Big to Fail’ but what they do and how they do what they do is poles apart. Jack Welch led GE to unprecedented growth. Welch is regarded as one of the most successful CEOs of one of the most successful brands - GE. The way Jack describes management is very simple – everyone can thrive in a conducive environment but who can manage crisis distinguishes him/her from the rest of the crowd. He talks about 70-20-10 rule and if you look around your organization you will realize how true it is. I take his 70-20-10 rule as this – 70% come to work because they have to, 20% come to work because they love to and 10% come to work because they have nowhere else to go. Every weekday when you get up and get ready to go to work and if you do not feel excited about the day I suggest you quit your job and find something that will excite you in the morning and keep you excited till the day ends.

Hans van der Hoeven, MSc is a senior lecturer in ERP, Business Management and Accounting at Avans University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. The book is tought for beginners: it appears to be school lesson summary. My expectation was for a much more deeper analysis. However, for a beginner it may be a good introduction to an erp tool and a basic features

LACKING SO MUCH!!

I read the reviews and wanted to give this author a try. I'm always looking for new authors. I enjoy interesting intelligent plot twists and characters. For this genre my favorite is Jill Mansell who is so funny but I realize that not everyone has the gift of humour. Jane Fallon and Jane Green, I like too - I'm sure I'm leaving someone out, but I prefer British authors because I am an anglophile. This book - I kept waiting and waiting for something interesting to happen and really it never did. It dragged all through a year and it wasn't until half-way through that it became interesting. The characters were colorful and clearly drawn, but I felt there was not enough story there for them to work with. And it was so PG that it could be YA, but that is not even what the problem was. This group of characters was rather stagnant - Just a couple of them had love lives. Everyone else was waiting for an anvil on the head. I can't stand such inaction. I like a sexy, intelligent plot and this was not it. Yes, I like romance but this was too light and dawdling.

A Sweet Romantic Tale....

After receiving an email about this book I thought that I must read it because after reading reviews for this book I found it quite intriguing.

You start of with Romily meeting up with her best friend Charlie and she is having a debate in her head about whether she should admit to Charlie that she is in love with him. When she finally reveals her feelings to him, he has no idea how to process what has just been said and that results in Romily running out of the caf� and away from Charlie.

After running away Romily ends up running into a Christmas stall and destroying parts of it, she ends up trying to put it all back together and is shocked that this random stranger actually helps her out. She finds him quite attractive but unfortunately doesn't get his name, soon after they depart ways she finds herself up by the arts and crafts market where out of no where they guy that helped her has came and followed her. They share a brief moment with a kiss and then the guy has to go but before she has chance to find anything else about the guy he disappears into the crowd.

After she goes to visit her Auntie and Uncle she develops the idea of starting a blog with a quest to find the stranger for a whole year. She has no idea if it will work or no but with some encouragement from her bandmates and her Auntie and Uncle she finds her quest spiralling out of control but in a good way because she gets lots of supporters.

The quest is going well but Romily finds that each time she starts getting closer the mystery man she seems to hit a dead end. By the time she is half way through the year her blog has got loads of people following her and encouraging her to continue with her quest, she is already trying to build bridges back with Charlie and it is proving harder than anything else.

Charlie has been acting completely different since the new year and Romily can't quite put her finger on it, but it seems to her that everyone else in their band is in on some big secret and every time they start to say something they all just quickly drop the subject like it's nothing important.

Towards the end of this book I honestly thought that I knew how it would turn out but the way it actually does end completely shocks and throws you. If you honestly want to know what happens at the end then I would definitely pick up this book and read it. Once I did start reading it I couldn't put it down at all, I knew I wouldn't be happy until I read the whole way through.

The actual story is pretty good but the author emphasis too much on the surrounding areas etc there might be over 20 pages each time there are new surrounding so I found I had to skip a lot of pages. It also dragged on a bit too much.

One of my favorite books from this author!!

This was a fascinating story about Rebecca and the roller-coaster ride that she experiences in her marriage and in life. In order for her to find peace and happiness she must over come heartaches and hard times in her life. She has been so hurt in her life that she thinks that every man will end up hurting her. She meets the handsome Ethan and questions herself about her feelings for him. I LOVE how Jenna Pizzi includes real life situations(illnesses/loss)in her books! It really brings her story to a whole other level! I recommend this book to anyone and everyone that loves a wonderful romance!
Just an FYI, you will laugh, cry, and be angry along with the characters in this book. You may even feel all these emotions at once!!

I loved how the author blended the different characters together and the extended family. This book is so representative of the world today as families are emerging and blending.

The evolving love story was amazing...... The lead characters have a lot of emotional baggage to deal with before ALL can move forward in a positive way. The end resulting family is not just modern, but realistic and it makes you feel like your part of the extended family.

I bought this book after a free read by the author.... Great investment!

I Loved This Book!

Sweet Serendipity was so true to life and heart ache in our modern world. What would we do without extended families today? Rebecca was my ideal in the heroine roll dealing with each of life's tragedies thrown her way, while Ethan was the perfect caring hero in every way. While crying and loving my way through this book I even cried for Jack. This book drew both tears of sadness and tears of joy.

Jaffna Tamil cuisine - Excellent!

This book on the cuisine of the Jaffna Tamils is wonderful, and totally authentic. While definitely not recommended for those who are beginners in Indian cooking, this is a focused, delicious journey into a distinct Southern Indian/north Ceylon(Sri Lanka) regional cuisine. The only downside is that some of the ingredients are obscure and difficult to obtain for western cooks. Nonetheless, with increased availability of some of these ingredients over the Internet, much of it can be enjoyed by those with experience in Indian regional cooking.
